Resident Evil Casts One of Horror’s Biggest New Stars in Haunting New ‘Requiem’ Short Film Ad

Get ready for Resident Evil Requiem, launching February 27, 2026! Capcom is building excitement with a new three-minute short film called Resident Evil Requiem – Evil Has Always Had a Name. The film offers a glimpse into the game’s dark atmosphere and expands on the series’ story. It’s not only a great way to hype up fans, but also a well-made and fitting addition to the Resident Evil universe.

The short film Evil Has Always Had a Name was released on February 2, 2026, starring Maika Monroe (known for Longlegs) as the central character. It’s a chilling story told from the perspectives of a mother and daughter as a deadly infection takes hold of Raccoon City in 1998. The film offers a glimpse into the experiences of those affected by the outbreak during the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Fans of the series will even recognize Nemesis’s iconic “STARS!” shout, firmly placing the short within the established timeline.

Longlegs Star Maika Monroe Gets Zombified

As a horror fan, I immediately recognized Maika Monroe – she’s awesome in Longlegs and It Follows! She teamed up with director Rich Lee for this really cool short film. I read an interview with her in Entertainment Weekly, and she said what drew her to the project was how much heart it had. She described it as a genuinely sad story, and she thought it was a fresh take on how to introduce a new video game. The short starts with this little girl hiding in a closet, super panicked, and then her mom (that’s Monroe!) comes bursting in, thinking they’re playing hide-and-seek. There’s a voiceover about how great things used to be before… you can probably guess what’s coming. You can check it out below – I definitely recommend it!

The short film offers a compelling look at the Raccoon City outbreak and how it affected ordinary people. While the games focus on fighting monsters, this story reminds us those creatures were once people, focusing on a mother and daughter struggling to survive. They desperately hide from the monsters hunting them in the city’s ruins. The film powerfully concludes with a fully zombified Monroe clutching a photo of her and her daughter, a heartbreaking reminder of what was lost.

As expected from the long-running Resident Evil series, which debuted in 1996, this short film is dark and frightening. It’s just one of the new releases planned for the franchise this year, with a rebooted film series starting on September 18, 2026, directed by Zach Cregger. If this short is a good example of what’s to come, fans have a lot to anticipate when Requiem launches on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S on February 27, 2026.
