Classic ’90s Sega Game Getting New Remaster This Month

A beloved Sega game from the 1990s is receiving a modern update this month, available on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Currently, there are no plans to release it on Nintendo or Xbox consoles, and it’s unknown if the game will be further enhanced for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Interestingly, this remaster isn’t being developed by Sega, the original publisher, but by a company called Screaming Villains. It’s not clear exactly when Sega lost the rights to the game, but they no longer own the intellectual property.

Back in 1993, if you owned a Sega CD, you might remember Prize Fighter, a game made exclusively for the console by Digital Pictures and published by Sega. Digital Pictures unfortunately went out of business just three years after the game came out. If you didn’t have a Sega CD, you probably never heard of Prize Fighter – it wasn’t a huge hit and reviews were mixed. So, it’s quite a surprise to see this interactive, full-motion video game make a comeback, especially as a remastered version!

33-Year-Old Sega Game

This updated version of the game is called Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition. According to Screaming Villains, it’s been completely rebuilt with improved graphics in 4K, plus a number of other enhancements and new features. In the game, you’ll compete in a main event, battling three challengers before facing the champion.

One commenter exclaimed, “Wow, this looks fantastic! It’s incredible considering how limited the original Sega CD’s display was.” Another fan simply wrote, “YES! Bring on the action!”

The updated version of the game is scheduled to come out on February 20, 2026, though the price hasn’t been announced yet. We expect it will likely cost between $10 and $30, but that’s just a guess based on the work involved. Also, the company Screaming Villains seems to enjoy re-releasing older sports games from the 90s, as they’re also planning a remastered version of Slam City with Scottie Pippen later this year.
