Wonder Woman is a globally recognized superhero, famous as the Amazonian princess who champions peace, truth, and a brighter future. Though raised in a perfect paradise, she chose to come to the human world to help people live without violence and suffering. While dedicated to peace, she’s always prepared to defend the innocent and is incredibly powerful enough to protect the world. Despite her widespread popularity, DC Comics has largely ignored a significant reveal about her character that was made a decade ago.
Wonder Woman is canonically bisexual, a part of her identity revealed in the 2016 Wonder Woman comic run by Greg Rucka. The story showed her reflecting on a past relationship with Kasia, whom she loved before leaving her home island, Themyscira. Although this aspect of her character has appeared in alternate storylines since then, it’s rarely addressed in the main DC Universe. However, a new storyline in Absolute Wonder Woman is bringing Diana’s bisexuality to the forefront, making it a central part of the narrative.
Two Witches and Visions of Aphrodite

The latest issue of Absolute Wonder Woman began with a flashback to Wonder Woman’s childhood, where the goddess Aphrodite paid her a visit. Though Aphrodite stopped visiting Diana before the other gods, she left a lasting impression, convincing the young princess that love was a potent and dangerous force. Feeling uneasy, Diana attended the opening of an Amazon exhibit at the Gateway City Natural History Museum. Suddenly, she collapsed, experiencing another vision of Aphrodite. She quickly recovered, but the wall behind her exploded as Zatanna and the Suicide Squad from Area 41 dramatically entered the scene.
Recently, Zatanna appeared to Wonder Woman as a spirit and used magic to take control of her powers. Zatanna then playfully used this control to magically bind Wonder Woman, all while flirting with her. Zatanna enjoyed showing off her newfound abilities, which came from Wonder Woman’s own magic, and Wonder Woman simply blushed as she watched. The romantic tension is clear, especially considering Diana called Zatanna beautiful when they first met. This storyline is exploring a side of Wonder Woman that hasn’t been seen much before – her attraction to other women – and it’s setting the stage for a compelling story about the strength of love.
The Dangers of Love

Watching Wonder Woman’s story unfold, I’ve been struck by how much more is happening beneath the surface, and Aphrodite’s appearance feels like a big clue. Even before the fight with Zatanna began, Diana was already talking about how addictive and risky public approval can be – how easy it would be to just keep doing what people want to see. Then Zatanna showed up, and it was fascinating to me that Diana didn’t seem flustered until after she was already magically bound. It could just be proximity, of course, but the way Diana’s eyes reacted to Zatanna’s magic felt… different, like something more was at play. Especially since Zatanna specifically said her spell controlled Diana’s voice – it makes you wonder how far that control actually goes, and what’s happening in Diana’s mind.
It’s more probable that Diana has a slight romantic interest in Zatanna, the powerful and alluring witch. Zatanna could potentially exploit these feelings – either magically or through her actions – which would fit the story’s focus on love’s strength and risks. The presence of Cheetah adds another layer to this. While Barbara Minerva hasn’t become Cheetah yet, she might willingly accept the curse that transforms her, sacrificing herself to save Diana because of her love, ultimately leading to her tragic fate.
Wonder Woman has always represented love, and her most compelling stories explore different forms of it. It’s unfortunate that her romantic side has often been overlooked. The alternate version of Diana in Absolute Wonder Woman, while not part of the main storyline, is successfully highlighting this important aspect of her character. No matter where the story goes from here, it’s a significant and welcome moment for fans who have long hoped to see Diana portrayed as bisexual.
