Caitriona Balfe, known for her role in Outlander, and Helena Bonham Carter, famous from the Harry Potter films, will both appear in the new movie, The Housekeeper. The film is a fictional story inspired by the real events that led Daphne du Maurier to write her classic novel, Rebecca.
After 28 years, a new installment is coming, titled ‘The Bone Temple’. Joining the acclaimed Anthony Hopkins in the film will be actress Emma Laird, and filming is scheduled to begin next week.
The movie was originally revealed in 2024 with Uma Thurman and Sophie Devereux from Bridgerton set to star, but they have since left the project.
This film is based on a novel by Rose Tremain, which hasn’t been released yet. Experienced director Richard Eyre, known for films like Iris and The Children Act, directed it.

Eyre called the screenplay “dark, surprising, and mysterious,” and expressed excitement about creating a film that delivers on that potential.
The story unfolds in the dramatic coastal scenery of Cornwall, focusing on Danni, the housekeeper at the impressive Manderville Hall. The estate is owned by the rich and recently widowed Lord Grenville-Whithers.
Danni finds herself captivated by the arrival of the young writer, Daphne du Maurier (Laird), and they begin a secret, passionate relationship. For Danni, it’s a total immersion into love, while for Daphne, it sparks feelings she’s kept hidden for a long time.
A delicate secret is in danger of being exposed, especially with Adelaide, Lord Grenville-Whithers’s shrewd niece, watching closely.
Daphne du Maurier’s novels have been adapted into films many times. The 1940 film version of Rebecca, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, famously won the Academy Award for Best Picture. More recently, in 2020, Ben Wheatley directed a new adaptation of the gothic novel, featuring Lily James and Armie Hammer.
Several of Daphne du Maurier’s stories have been turned into famous films, including Hitchcock’s Jamaica Inn and The Birds, and Nicolas Roeg’s highly regarded horror film Don’t Look Now.
