10 Best Marvel Heroic Legacies

Marvel began publishing superhero comics in 1939 and has since created some of the most iconic characters in the industry. While DC Comics is famous for its long-running legacy of heroes and the families they’ve spawned, Marvel approached the idea a bit differently. Many of Marvel’s heroes are more recent creations and took time to establish their place in comics history. Nevertheless, numerous Marvel characters have gone on to build their own legacies and create families of related heroes, all stemming from the original trailblazers. Like with many concepts, Marvel put its own unique spin on the idea of heroic lineages.

Marvel has a history of incredible heroic families who’ve established lasting legacies. These families have passed down iconic roles, inspiring new generations of heroes – many of whom have become fan favorites. Here are ten of the most celebrated and prestigious of these heroic lineages, filled with some of Marvel’s greatest champions.

10) Iron Man Family

Over the years, Tony Stark built many different Iron Man suits, all of which he personally used. He established Iron Man as a famous hero, so it wasn’t surprising when others began to follow in his footsteps. James Rhodes was the first, briefly taking on the Iron Man identity before becoming War Machine. He and Tony worked together for years, and were later joined by Pepper Potts as Rescue. Eventually, Riri Williams and Victor Von Doom also created their own Iron Man armors. Though relatively small, the group of heroes connected to Iron Man is incredibly significant.

9) The Ants

Hank Pym first became a superhero in 1962 and has since become a hugely influential figure in the Marvel Universe. He’s famous for inventing Pym Particles, which allow people to change size, as well as technologies like ant communication helmets and the Wasp’s wings. As Ant-Man, he was a founding member of the Avengers, and both the Ant-Man and Wasp identities have been used by multiple heroes over the years. Scott Lang and Eric O’Grady have both been Ant-Man, Nadia Van Dyne (and Pym himself) have been the Wasp, and even Scott Lang’s daughter has used Pym’s technology as Stature and Stinger. Beyond that, many other heroes and villains have used names connected to Pym’s inventions, such as Giant-Man, Goliath, and Yellowjacket, making his one of the most extensive legacies in Marvel history.

8) The Thors

While many versions of Thor exist across different universes, the Thor from the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) has a particularly notable history. He famously lost his hammer, Mjolnir, to Beta Ray Bill, but eventually reclaimed it. Later, Eric Masterson briefly became Thor, fighting alongside the Avengers. When the original Thor returned, things got complicated – Eric wielded Thor’s power while the original was absent, but eventually regained control. More recently, Jane Foster took up the mantle of Thor and became a very popular iteration of the hero. It’s easy to forget just how many different people have been Thor over the years, with Jane being the newest in a long line.

7) The Summers Family

Cyclops is considered the most powerful mutant superhero, and he’s built a remarkable family legacy. The Summers family is one of the strongest mutant families around, starting with Cyclops and his brother Havok, both heroes. They later discovered their father was actually the space pirate known as Corsair. The lineage continued with Cyclops’ son, Cable, and alternate-reality daughter, Rachel. Jean Grey became part of the family, and another brother, Vulcan, emerged later on. Hope Summers was born after a period when mutant births had stopped, and while initially given the Summers name as a gesture, it was eventually revealed that she was a true Summers by blood, as Jean Grey had conceived her with the Phoenix Force.

6) The Hulks

The Hulk is famously the strongest being around, and over time, several heroes have taken on aspects of his power. It started with his cousin, She-Hulk, but others followed. Rick Jones briefly became the Hulk, and later became a new version of the villain Abomination. Even the Hulk’s greatest enemy, Thunderbolt Ross, transformed into the Red Hulk, and his love, Betty Ross, became the Red She-Hulk, eventually becoming Harpy. Amadeus Cho also joined the Hulk family, becoming the “Totally Awesome Hulk” before going by the name Brawn. Interestingly, many of these other gamma-powered heroes are arguably more heroic than Bruce Banner himself, but they always unite when needed, showing that the Hulk represents more than just a monstrous force.

5) Wolverine Family

I always thought Wolverine was a loner, so it’s been amazing to see how much his family has grown! It’s wild to think about him as a dad, but Marvel really ran with it in the 21st century. First, they introduced Daken, who turned out to be Logan’s son – a ‘Dark Wolverine’ of sorts. Then, after Logan’s death, Laura Kinney, aka X-23, stepped up and became Wolverine, which was incredible. And now, with Honey Badger (Scout) joining her, it feels like we’ve got this whole multi-generational team of Wolverines protecting us – it’s a really cool evolution for the character!

4) Captain Marvel Family

The title of Captain Marvel has a rich history, similar to iconic heroes from DC Comics. It began with Mar-Vell, a Kree warrior who dedicated himself to protecting Earth and became a celebrated figure. He worked alongside Carol Danvers, who later became Ms. Marvel and held that identity for many years. Following Mar-Vell’s death, several others took on the Captain Marvel role, including Monica Rambeau and Mar-Vell’s son, Genis-Vell. Eventually, Carol Danvers reclaimed the title. Beyond the main Captain Marvel lineage, related heroes have emerged. Monica Rambeau later became known as Spectrum and Photon – names also used by Genis-Vell and his sister, Phyla. Additionally, two other women have been Ms. Marvel: Sharon Ventura (who is also associated with the Fantastic Four) and Kamala Khan. Mar-Vell’s initial heroism sparked a lasting legacy throughout the Marvel Universe.

3) The Spider Family

Spider-Man is often considered Marvel’s most down-to-earth hero, and over the past few decades, a whole group of related characters have emerged. The first was Ben Reilly, a clone of Peter Parker who later became known as the Scarlet Spider (another clone, Kaine Parker, would eventually take on that name). More recently, Miles Morales stepped in after the death of a different version of Spider-Man, and Spider-Gwen arrived from her own universe. Now, even younger heroes like Spider-Boy and Spider-Girl have joined the ranks. It took some time, but Spider-Man has built up a surprisingly large family of heroic allies.

2) The Richards’ Family

The Fantastic Four are considered the founding family of the Marvel Universe. Reed Richards and Sue Storm are married, and they’ve built a family with Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm, who are like brothers to them. They eventually had two children, Franklin and Valeria, and together they often save the universe. Ben found love with Alicia Masters and became a father to two adopted children with Kree and Skrull origins, while Johnny is known as the team’s charming personality. The Richards family has repeatedly saved the entire multiverse and are responsible for some of the world’s most advanced inventions. The Richards name carries significant weight in the Marvel Universe – one of their descendants even becomes the villain Kang, and Reed’s father was a brilliant time traveler himself.

1) The Captain Americas

Captain America is considered Marvel’s most iconic hero and has inspired a long line of successors. Over the years, five different individuals have taken on the role: Steve Rogers, William Burnside, Johnny Walker, Bucky Barnes, and Sam Wilson. Bucky Barnes himself has also been a source of inspiration, with others like Jack Monroe, Rick Jones, and Lemar Hopkins following in his footsteps. Steve Rogers has even operated under different identities, including Nomad and simply ‘The Captain.’ Sam Wilson also has a history as the Falcon, with Joaquin Torres later taking on that role. Ultimately, none of these heroes would be who they are without the original Captain America’s bravery and example.
