For over a decade, fans of the Mistborn fantasy series have eagerly anticipated a movie adaptation. After being announced in 2010, the project faced numerous setbacks. Now, thanks to a new agreement with Apple TV to adapt Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe, the movie is finally moving forward. The author’s recent announcement suggests the long wait will be worth it, despite how frustrating it’s been.
Apple TV’s deal for Brandon Sanderson’s books is generating a lot of buzz. Not only will fans finally see a fantastic fantasy story brought to life on screen, but it could also open doors for other great fantasy novels to be adapted. Beyond the potential impact on the genre, Sanderson’s significant involvement in the adaptation process is a promising sign. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’ll have even more creative control than George R.R. Martin has with HBO’s Game of Thrones. Sanderson recently shared details about his contributions, and it’s all incredibly exciting – making the long wait worthwhile.
Brandon Sanderson Will Write the Screenplay for the Upcoming Mistborn Movie

Brandon Sanderson recently shared details on Reddit about his new partnership with Apple, explaining why he chose them to adapt his novels. He emphasized Apple’s willingness to let him be creatively involved in the process, and also praised the high quality of their recent TV shows and movies. Sanderson then revealed his significant role in the upcoming Mistborn film: he’ll be writing the screenplay himself, which is exciting news for fans.
I’m dedicating the next five months to writing the screenplay for Mistborn as my primary job. My aim is to create a Mistborn movie for theaters, and then a Stormlight Archive television show. I’m prioritizing quality and taking the time to get it done well.
Having Brandon Sanderson adapt Mistborn significantly increases the chances of a faithful and well-done adaptation. No one understands the story and world better than he does, making him the perfect person to decide what needs to be adjusted for the screen while preserving the essence of the books. This news should reassure fans that the project is in the hands of its creator, and it’s a relief that previous attempts at adaptation never materialized. It’s exactly what fans have been hoping for.
The Author’s Involvement Makes the Long Wait for a Mistborn Film Worth It

Brandon Sanderson’s active role in finally developing a Mistborn movie makes all the previous failed attempts worthwhile. There have been several setbacks – Paloppa Pictures LLC owned the rights for a time but let them lapse, and a more recent deal with Epic Games (through TikTok) also fell apart, leading Sanderson to reclaim the rights. He’s always maintained he’ll only move forward with an adaptation if it truly honors his work. This has led many to believe a Mistborn movie might never happen, but his current involvement offers renewed hope.
Luckily, those earlier concerns didn’t come true, and the project has made significant progress since restarting in 2024 (according to updates from State of the Sanderson). Looking back, it’s actually a good thing that previous efforts to adapt Scadrial failed. Had those attempts succeeded, Brandon Sanderson might not have been able to secure such a favorable agreement – and he might not be the one writing the latest adaptation of his story.
The Latest Update Comes With a Catch for Brandon Sanderson’s Books

As a huge Sanderson fan, I’m thrilled about him writing the Mistborn screenplay! But there’s a bit of a trade-off, it seems. He’s been making amazing progress on Mistborn: Ghostbloods this year, and just finished the first book – which is fantastic news! However, to work on the screenplay, he’ll have to pause writing the remaining two books in that series. He actually predicted this might happen in his 2025 blog post and recently confirmed it on Reddit. Basically, getting a Mistborn movie is awesome, but it might mean a temporary wait for the next installment in the Ghostbloods series.
Despite all this, he promised to still prioritize finishing his books. Since Brandon Sanderson intends to finish the third Era of his Cosmere universe and release the first book in 2028, he has plenty of time to achieve his goals. Even if the release of Ghostbloods is pushed back a little because of the adaptation, most fans will agree it’s a worthwhile trade-off after waiting over ten years.
