As the Pokémon franchise approaches its 30th anniversary this year, excitement is building and rumors are swirling. While the official Pokémon Day 2026 celebration is still a few weeks off, fans are speculating about what announcements might be made during this year’s Pokémon Presents showcase. We’ve already seen some commemorative trading card game items and the return of the original, chubbier Pikachu, but most believe this is only a small part of what’s planned for the 30th anniversary. Recently, a new free gift for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers has led some fans to believe a popular spin-off series might be getting a new game soon.
Nintendo recently released a collection of profile pictures for Nintendo Switch Online inspired by Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Players who play Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team on the Nintendo Switch Online Classics service between now and March 2nd will receive these new icons. Some fans are speculating this is a hint that a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game might be in development, as the original game has been available on the service for some time.
Pokemon Fans Hope for New Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Game Following NSO Icon Reveal

The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series began in 2005 with the launch of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team. Several new games followed, including a 2020 remake based on the original Red and Blue Rescue Team. However, it’s been more than a decade since the last completely new game, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon.
For some time now, players who enjoy the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series have been able to play Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. While Nintendo DS games aren’t widely available on the service, this particular game originally came out on the Game Boy Advance and was added to the Game Boy Advance Classics library in August 2024. Because of this, many Pokemon fans believe Nintendo is planning something new, as they’ve recently started promoting the game again with new profile icons for Nintendo Switch Online – almost two years after its initial release.

Nintendo Switch Online regularly adds new profile pictures as free gifts. Recently, they’ve added Pokémon icons based on the Red Rescue Team game, and this could be just the beginning of a new set. Some fans believe this timing suggests Nintendo and The Pokémon Company might be planning to re-promote the Rescue Team series.
Pokemon Day 2026 is almost here, and fans are eagerly anticipating big news. While some new icons have appeared, sparking excitement for the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series and encouraging players to revisit the original game, there’s currently no solid evidence of a new game announcement at this year’s Pokemon Presents. Despite this, many fans are still hoping the icons could be a hint of things to come.
