With a release date now set for Daredevil: Born Again, fans are starting to guess what the new Disney+ show will offer. A major highlight of the recent trailer was the first look at Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones since her Netflix series concluded in 2019. Her return is exciting, and it could become even more significant if Born Again explores a side of her character that wasn’t shown in any of the original Netflix Defenders shows.
Krysten Ritter first played Jessica Jones in 2015, alongside David Tennant as Nick Kilgrave, in a series that fans still consider a standout part of the Marvel’s Defenders story. For a long time, it was unclear if the Jessica Jones show, and other Marvel series from Netflix, were officially part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, it’s now been confirmed they do exist within the same timeline as the Avengers films and other core MCU content. This means the Jessica Jones we’ll see return is the same character from the 2010s shows, opening up exciting possibilities for future storylines.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 Can Introduce Jessica Jones’ Power of Flight

Netflix
By the time we’re introduced to Jessica in the Netflix series, she’s already lost faith in her abilities. Following her traumatic encounter with Kilgrave, she largely rejects the idea of being a superhero, only using her powers when she has no other choice. This reluctance is also present in the comics, but the show emphasizes it even more. This leads to infrequent, somewhat messy but ultimately successful displays of her strength. While her enhanced strength and resilience are clear throughout the series, she never learns to fly.
Jessica Jones, when fighting crime as the vigilante Jewel, used to be able to fly. However, after she stops being a traditional superhero and becomes a private investigator, her flying ability begins to fade from lack of practice. While she still can fly, it starts to look more like exceptionally high jumps because she’s out of shape for aerial maneuvers. The Netflix series showed her performing these impressive jumps, but it was never made clear if these were remnants of her flying powers or simply feats of super strength. Now, the new series Daredevil: Born Again offers Marvel the opportunity to finally explain what’s happening with her abilities.
Why Now Is the Perfect Time for Jessica Jones to Regain Her Last Missing Comic-Accurate Power
While the stories from the Defenders series are now officially part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, they used to feel separate from the big-screen movies. Netflix intentionally kept these shows realistic and avoided big connections to the more fantastical elements of Marvel. Now, with the new Daredevil: Born Again series being created directly as part of the MCU, that distance is gone.

As a fan, I really noticed how Born Again Season 1 cleverly connected to the wider MCU. They dropped references to characters like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man, which would have felt totally out of place in the old Netflix shows. Back then, those cameos would have been distracting, but now, within the MCU, they just work. Seeing this approach applied to the Defenders makes things like imagining Jessica Jones flying around New York feel…possible! Honestly, it would have been pretty silly in the Netflix universe, but now it feels like a natural step for her character. I’m even starting to think we might see her back to actively fighting crime in Daredevil: Born Again, maybe even as Jewel!
