It’s been two decades since Shane Meadows’s critically acclaimed film, This Is England, first came out. The film was so popular it led to three follow-up series: This Is England ’86, ’88, and ’90.
In a 2020 interview with Andrew Shim for his YouTube series, Meadows mentioned he was considering a sequel to ‘This Is England’, tentatively titled ‘This Is England ’00’. The new series would be set and filmed ten years after the events of the original, continuing the story of Shaun and his friends.
He mentioned he’d been thinking about revisiting ‘This Is England ’00’, the series set around the year 2000. He was trying to remember when they filmed the last installment – he believed it was either 2015 or 2016 – and thought it might be a good time to do another one.
It’s still about five years off, and I definitely don’t want to just copy what’s been done in other movies, but if I could revisit the idea, I’d really like to make a film set around the millennium.
Now, we’re in 2026, the proposed release date for that series – and nothing has yet materialised.
There’s still hope for another series of This Is England! Jack Thorne, who co-wrote the show with Vince Meadows, has hinted that more episodes could happen.
In a recent interview for our series, The TopMob Writers’ Room, where we explore the minds of screenwriters, Thorne explained his approach to a potential new season of This Is England ’00. He stated that he’s happy to follow the lead of creator Shane Meadows, saying, “If Shane wants to do it, I’m on board.”
I’ve definitely noticed a few times where he’s hinted at possibly doing something new, but it always seems to be when he feels the time is right to share another story. Honestly, it could happen anytime – maybe soon, maybe years from now, it’s really whenever he’s ready.
For me, the turning point came when he said he was ready to revisit the character of Shaun. You see, Shaun Fields from ‘This Is England’ is really a stand-in for Shane Meadows himself – it’s deeply personal for him. So, when he felt ready to tell more of Shaun’s story, that’s when things really clicked for me. It felt like he was ready to share something truly from the heart.
Though he started with roles like the one in ‘This Is England ’86’, Thorne has since become a highly successful writer, creating popular series and films, most recently the blockbuster ‘Adolescence’.
Later this week, a new four-episode version of William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies, will be available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
