Avengers: Doomsday Officially Continues the Strangest Infinity War Decision

The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is coming soon, and despite appearing to follow Avengers: Endgame, it actually picks up a peculiar storyline that began with Avengers: Infinity War. Infinity War was a massive film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking the start of a huge conclusion to years of storytelling. That’s why it was so shocking when it significantly altered one of the original Avengers.

Following the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Russo brothers quickly became key directors within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They demonstrated their ability to manage large-scale team-up films with Captain America: Civil War, which led to them directing the epic Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Despite numerous changes in development and several other directors being considered, Marvel chose the Russo brothers to return for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. They plan to incorporate many of the themes and approaches that made their earlier Avengers films so successful.

The Russos Love Undoing Waititi’s Portrayal Of Thor

Chris Hemsworth last played Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, a movie that received a lot of criticism. Many viewers felt the film was too silly and wondered if future Marvel movies would present a different take on the character.

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday confirmed that Thor is returning to a more serious demeanor. Compared to his lighter portrayal in Love and Thunder, this Thor is much more somber, with weightier dialogue and a more practical outfit. He appears to be approaching the fight against Doom with far greater seriousness than he did against Gorr, a shift attributed to the directors moving away from the comedic style established in Love and Thunder.

At first, Thor was portrayed as a very serious character in his early Marvel movies. However, Thor: Ragnarok completely changed that, giving him a much funnier personality that fans loved. But Avengers: Infinity War brought him back to a more somber tone, restoring his eye and giving him a powerful weapon. Now, it seems like Thor’s personality is shifting again.

Following the lighthearted tone of Love and Thunder, Doomsday is returning Thor to a more serious portrayal. It’s notable that the directors, the Russos, have made such a significant shift in Thor’s character twice, both times at the beginning of a two-part Avengers storyline. While fans are more receptive to this change now – likely due to the mixed reaction to Love and ThunderDoomsday seems to be continuing the trend of a serious Thor established in Infinity War.

This Avengers Pattern Makes Love’s Endgame Return More Surprising

Given that the Russo brothers often reversed creative choices made by Taika Waititi regarding Thor, it’s unexpected to see the character Love still appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. Love was first introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder as Gorr’s daughter, and Thor adopts her by the end of the movie. The film hinted at a future storyline where Thor and Love would act as a father-daughter team, something many Marvel fans thought would never be fully explored.

Love appears to play a central role in Thor’s story in Doomsday. The trailer focuses on him wishing for her well-being and wanting to shield her from an unknown danger. While it’s unclear how important Love will ultimately be to the movie, her prominence in the first footage released for Doomsday is noteworthy.

I’m really glad the Russos seem to be keeping the character of Love around in the upcoming projects! It makes sense, considering the next big storyline, Doomsday, is really focusing on heroes who are also parents – like Reed Richards, Captain America, and now Thor. Honestly, a lot about Doomsday is still a mystery, and I’m super curious to see exactly how Love will fit into the whole thing.

We’re basing these ideas on just one trailer, so Doomsday might not change Thor’s story all that much. We don’t know when in the movie this footage takes place, meaning Thor could start out as a comedic character before something happens to make him more serious. Ultimately, we’ll only have answers when Avengers: Doomsday comes out.
