Over the years, numerous science fiction television series have gone unnoticed and failed to gain widespread attention, despite being worthy of acclaim. For decades, TV has been a significant provider of science fiction entertainment, with shows like “Star Trek,” “Doctor Who,” and “Battlestar Galactica” leading the way in creating a wealth of sci-fi adventures. These series, along with many others, have explored various themes such as superpowers, extraterrestrials, future societies, and alternate histories within the vast landscape of science fiction. Regrettably, not all science fiction TV shows receive the recognition they truly deserve.
Fresh TV series like “Foundation”, “Severance”, “Stranger Things”, “Murderbot”, and many more are carrying on the extraordinary tradition of science fiction on television screens. Some TV shows haven’t received the acclaim and attention they merit, yet they hold crucial positions in the history of sci-fi TV. Unfortunately, some have faced unsuccessful reboot attempts or have been overshadowed, but all deserve to be revisited and discussed once more.
7) The Middleman (2008)
In the year 2008, the television series “The Middleman” debuted, featuring Matt Keesler’s anonymous protagonist known as “The Middleman.” This character recruits Natalie Morales’ character, Wendy Watson, a struggling artist, to embark on thrilling missions to save the world from alien invasions, mad scientists, and supernatural events. Initially planned for 13 episodes, ABC Family only released 12 before cancelling the series. Inspired by Viper Comics’ “The Middleman” series, this live-action show was engaging, colorful, and visually appealing, but its shortcomings ultimately led to its cancellation and subsequent obscurity. A revival of “The Middleman” would significantly enhance its popularity.
6) Continuum (2012-2015)
From 2012 to 2015, the Showcase series Continuum centered around a struggle between a band of time-traveling villains from the future and Officer Kiera Cameron (played by Rachel Nichols), who unwittingly journeyed back in time with them. Continuum seamlessly combined science fiction with crime drama, drawing parallels to the highly praised Life on Mars. Despite its critical acclaim and popularity during its run, Continuum is not often discussed in sci-fi television discourse. However, the series boasts a wealth of intriguing science fiction elements, features outstanding and polished performances from its cast, and presents numerous opportunities for spinoffs and sequels.
5) Dark Matter (2015-2017)
In contrast to the current popular Apple TV+ series starring Joel Edgerton, Dark Matter, initially a comic book series penned by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie during their Stargate tenure, isn’t the same. This show revolves around six mercenaries who mysteriously awaken from stasis onboard the spaceship Raza, unaware of their identities or origins. Despite growing ratings over three seasons, Syfy decided to terminate the series due to declining viewership, despite its concept being intriguing and the storyline not fully developed.
4) Archive 81 (2022)
According to the 2016 podcast of the same name, “Archive 81” debuted on Netflix in 2022 to widespread acclaim, but unfortunately, this supernatural horror series has since faded from memory. In the show, Mamoudou Athie portrays Dan and Dina Shihabi plays Melody – with Melody recording tapes in 1994 for a documentary about a puzzling building, while Dan is hired by a cryptic company years later to restore these tapes after the building had burned down. “Archive 81” was filled with mystery and tension, and could greatly benefit from renewed interest, potentially leading to the much-anticipated second season.
3) Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (2016-2018)
In the past, Marvel icon Stan Lee revealed that if he could have any superpower, it would be the ability of good fortune. This idea was later developed into the TV series “Stan Lee’s Lucky Man“, a collaboration between Lee and Neil Biswas for Sky 1. The show centers around Murder Squad detective and habitual gambler James Nesbitt’s character, Harry Clayton, who acquires a lucky charm, leading to extraordinary experiences. To date, this British series has been Sky 1’s most successful original drama production. Regrettably, it remains relatively unknown among American viewers, but its recognition should be increased due to Lee’s participation and Nesbitt’s captivating and emotionally engaging performance.
2) The 4400 (2004-2007)
In 2021, the remake of the popular ‘4400’ series from the 4400’s ended after only one season, failing to match the success and appeal of the original show that ran for four seasons between 2004 and 2007. The original ‘4400’ introduced a captivating storyline about a group of people who had vanished over the past 60 years and reappeared near Seattle, Washington, without any signs of aging and possessing extraordinary supernatural powers. This show is often hailed as one of the best science fiction series in its class, making it unfortunate that the remake didn’t achieve the same level of success. Notably, future Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali appeared in an early role on the show, making it worth checking out.
1) FlashForward (2009-2010)
The captivating plotline of FlashForward warranted far more than just one season. Airing on ABC, this series depicted a global blackout lasting 137 seconds during which everyone on Earth caught a glimpse of their lives six months into the future. FBI agent Mark Benton, played by Joseph Fiennes, was tasked with uncovering the mystery behind the event, its cause, and whether it would occur again – an eventuality that indeed transpired. Despite being a complex concept, FlashForward maintained a realistic feel, its characters were relatable, and the narrative was both energetic and profoundly meaningful. The cancellation of FlashForward sparked fury among its fan base, making it all the more desirable for this series to finally receive the recognition it truly merits.
