From the start, the Marvel Cinematic Universe promised everything would be interconnected. However, it quickly became apparent that this connection mostly flowed from the movies to the older Marvel TV shows, and not the other way around. As Jeph Loeb, who led Marvel Television, explained in 2019, the movies dictated the overall timeline and direction of the MCU, and the TV shows had to fit within that framework. This disconnect was also fueled by growing tensions and disagreements between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television.
The conflicts between different Marvel television shows are a thing of the past. Now, characters frequently move between movies, TV series, and other projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve even seen actors from older Marvel TV shows return – Charlie Cox, who played Matt Murdock, appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and is continuing his role in a new series. The trailer for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 included Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, and Jon Bernthal is also coming back as the Punisher in his own show. Now, Marvel has officially confirmed another potential return to the MCU.
Marvel Just Hinted That Cloak and Dagger Is Canon Again

With characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the Punisher reappearing, the older Marvel TV shows are in a weird position. They aren’t officially considered part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+, but fans know there’s always a chance those characters could be brought back into the official storyline. This made Marvel’s new series, Wonder Man, especially interesting. In episode 4, a flashback episode focusing on a character named Doorman, the show subtly suggested a big change to the established canon. Doorman got his powers from a strange, black substance.
Fans of older Marvel TV shows immediately recognized the black goo as being similar to a substance called Zero Matter or Darkforce, first seen in Season 2 of Agent Carter. That substance was connected to a company named Isodyne Energy, which was later bought by Roxxon (as shown in Agents of SHIELD). Roxxon’s work with Darkforce then led to the Cloak and Dagger series, which aired from 2018 to 2019. Interestingly, the recent Wonder Man series subtly confirmed that its black goo also originated with Roxxon, neatly connecting everything together.

Marvel fans are thrilled by the chance that the Cloak and Dagger series might become officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) again. This would mean Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph could return as their beloved characters. The show was a hit with both viewers and critics (earning an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), so the idea is particularly exciting. In December, Olivia Holt was asked if she’d be interested in reprising her role, and she confirmed that playing Dagger was one of her favorite experiences and that she’d be eager to return.
It’s currently unclear if Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph will return as Cloak and Dagger. Their potential involvement hinges on Marvel’s future plans, but the recent online buzz following the Wonder Man news likely hasn’t gone unnoticed. Based on comments from Holt, there’s a growing possibility these hopes will finally be realized, which would be a great outcome for one of Marvel’s strongest TV series.
