PS5 Officially Outsells PS3, Now at 92.2 Million Units

Based on the latest sales figures announced in their recent earnings report, the PlayStation 5 has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3.

Sony sold 8 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, bringing the total number of PS5s sold to 92.2 million as of December 31, 2025. With these sales, the PS5 has now outsold the PlayStation 3, which sold 87.4 million units in its lifetime. Sony’s next goal for the PS5 is to surpass the PlayStation 4’s sales of 117.2 million.

Last quarter, Sony sold 9.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles. Today’s announcement of eight million sales shows a decrease of 1.5 million units compared to the same period last year.

Things are looking good for PlayStation! As a gamer, I’m happy to see that game sales on both the PS5 and PS4 are up compared to last year. We all bought a ton of games in the last quarter – 97.2 million in total, which is 1.3 million more than last year. And the launch of Ghost of Yotei definitely helped, with 13.2 million first-party titles sold during that time. More games mean more to play, and that’s awesome!

The earnings report also revealed that digital game purchases now make up 76% of all PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 game sales. PlayStation Network (PSN) also saw an increase in users, reaching 132 million monthly active users – three million more than last year at this time.
