The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series is a fan favorite, arguably the most popular Pokémon spin-off besides the newer Legends games. These titles really emphasize the role-playing elements of Pokémon, offering a unique and refreshing take on the franchise. What makes Mystery Dungeon games special is that you play as a Pokémon, venturing into complex, multi-floor dungeons, battling bosses, and experiencing a compelling story alongside a partner Pokémon.
Fans adore Mystery Dungeon games because of their engaging stories and excellent gameplay. Like other games in the series, you and your teammate become more powerful as you play. You’ll explore dungeons, recruit allies, and tackle challenging objectives on long adventures that stay fresh and exciting. While battles still use the turn-based system familiar from Pokémon, the changing dungeon designs and moves create a unique combat experience unlike anything seen in the main Pokémon games.
The game introduces new status effects and items that drastically change how you play, challenging your expectations of a typical Pokémon experience. The remake also updated the graphics to match the look of more recent Pokémon games. Before that, the last new game, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, came out in 2015, and there hasn’t been much news about the series since.
Even though the early Mystery Dungeon games were updated, they still felt a bit old-fashioned and repetitive compared to the newer ones. Since 2020, there’s been no news about a remake of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness or Explorers of Sky – many fans consider Explorers of Sky the best version of the Gen 4 games. The Explorers games are beloved by players, and they feature a surprisingly deep and engaging story, especially considering they were originally aimed at a younger audience.
Remakes, Remasters, Or Sequels To Pokémon’s Most Interesting Spin-Off Would Be Amazing
Recent Pokémon games have focused on regional variations and expansive worlds, and a new or remade Mystery Dungeon game could benefit from these ideas. For instance, the massive Gigantamax Pokémon from Sword and Shield could be used as enormous and challenging bosses. Even without a completely new game, simply adding Pokémon or features from the main series into a remade Mystery Dungeon would be a welcome addition.

Adding regional forms, like those introduced in Legends, could also open up exciting new possibilities for the game.
While a new main series Pokémon game for the 10th generation seems certain, a Mystery Dungeon game could be a great choice to release first. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games haven’t been as rigidly defined by the traditional Pokémon formula, allowing for more creative freedom. However, the series has fallen into a pattern of predictability and could benefit from a fresh approach.
