Back in 2000, director Ron Howard created a beloved holiday film that people are still hoping to see continued. Over the years, it’s become a classic, and now one of the movie’s stars is finally speaking out about the possibility of a sequel.
Jim Carrey famously played the Grinch in the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Taylor Momsen starred as the young Cindy Lou Who. Now, 26 years later, Momsen has hinted at the possibility of a sequel, as reported by the New York Post.
At a party celebrating the Grammy Awards hosted by Steven Tyler’s Janie’s Fund, Taylor Momsen was asked about the possibility of the original cast of How the Grinch Stole Christmas ever reuniting. She said she wasn’t aware of any plans for a reunion, but added that the film is a beloved classic that has stood the test of time.
I was surprised to see Taylor Momsen talking about The Grinch again recently, especially since her comments seemed to walk back what she said last November. Back then, she hinted a sequel might be happening! She was at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Jim Carrey, and she told Entertainment Tonight that when Jim asks you to do something, you definitely listen. It made it sound like he was potentially asking her to be involved in another Grinch movie, but now it seems like that might not be the case.
Taylor Momsen was thrilled to see Jim Carrey again, noting it had been 25 years since their last meeting. She was completely surprised when Matt Cameron told her, saying the chances of them reconnecting were incredibly slim. Momsen and her band, The Pretty Reckless, recorded a version of “Where Are You Christmas” to celebrate the song’s 25th anniversary. Momsen originally performed the song in the movie as a child actor.
Jim Carrey on Playing the Grinch
Jim Carrey shared a funny story about filming the recent Grinch movie. To make the Grinch’s nose look right, the prosthetic had to cover his own. This meant he couldn’t breathe through his nose and the crew struggled to create breathing holes in the mask. He ended up breathing through his mouth for the entire film.
The costume was so irritating – made of incredibly itchy yak hair – that it drove the actor to the brink. Director Ron Howard recalled that Jim Carrey was genuinely considering returning his $20 million salary because of it.
Jim Carrey revealed that listening to the Bee Gees helped him cope with the difficult experience of getting into character as the Grinch. The lengthy makeup process, which eventually took around three hours, became more bearable thanks to the band’s upbeat music. He expressed his gratitude to Barry Gibb, though they’ve never met, for providing such a joyful soundtrack during that time.
So far, a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas has not been announced.
