Isabela Merced, known for playing Hawkgirl in the DC Universe’s Superman and Peacemaker, is now starring in a zombie horror movie based on a popular series. She’s no stranger to the horror genre, having impressed audiences with her role in HBO’s The Last of Us and facing off against aliens in Alien: Romulus. Besides continuing her work as Hawkgirl – with plans for her to appear in Man of Tomorrow – Merced is poised to potentially headline her own horror film series.
Fans of horror and video games have a new project to look forward to: an adaptation of the popular The House of the Dead series, starring Merced. These games are known for their fast-paced, action-packed gameplay where players fight hordes of running zombies in terrifying locations. The House of the Dead was one of the first franchises to feature fast-moving zombies, a dynamic the movie aims to capture. The film promises a fresh take on the game’s story, potentially unfolding in real time. While specific details are limited, the synopsis suggests a thrilling experience for fans.
A team of agents is working to contain a dangerous outbreak of mutants created by a shadowy group. Their mission includes rescuing a woman’s father and facing the organization’s leader, whose mind has been transferred into a being known as The Wheel of Fate.
Merced isn’t the only big name working on the House of the Dead movie. Paul W.S. Anderson will be writing and directing the adaptation. He’s well-known for making films based on video games, including Mortal Kombat, Monster Hunter, and the popular Resident Evil series with Milla Jovovich. Sega is also apparently very focused on House of the Dead, hoping to build on the success they’ve had with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Anderson has expressed strong enthusiasm for the House of the Dead game, saying:
I’ve been a huge fan of The House of the Dead for years, and I’m incredibly excited to adapt it into a movie starring the amazing Isabela. We hope this will be the first in a series of films, allowing us to fully explore the detailed world and story Sega has built.
‘House of the Dead’ Movies Have Been Made Before

Two movies have been made based on the popular horror video game, House of the Dead. The first, released in 2003, wasn’t well-received, largely because it was directed by Uwe Boll – a filmmaker known for his poor video game adaptations, including Bloodrayne and Far Cry. A second movie followed in 2006, airing only on the Sci Fi channel, and it wasn’t much better, even though Boll wasn’t involved. While the films didn’t successfully translate the games to the big screen, they did borrow some ideas, like the AMS organization, from the source material.

Initial images from the upcoming project suggest a fresh, modern take on the game. However, director Anderson has a history of deviating from established storylines in his video game adaptations, like those seen in the Resident Evil films. This means House of the Dead might also see some changes, potentially frustrating longtime fans. Despite this, Anderson consistently delivers a distinctive vision that often satisfies audiences, and he’s likely to do so again with this zombie horror franchise.
