HBO is continuing the success of its Game of Thrones universe with shows like House of the Dragon and the new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. They aim to replicate the cultural impact Game of Thrones had with another adaptation planned for 2027. Meanwhile, the Harry Potter franchise remains incredibly popular worldwide, built on its hugely successful books, movies, video games, and theme parks.
Now that Harry Potter is coming to television, the success of Game of Thrones offers a valuable blueprint. While both are fantasy series, Harry Potter generally appeals to a broader audience. Game of Thrones stood out for its high production value and immersive world, and HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series seems to be taking those elements into account – a promising sign for its future.
The Harry Potter Series Already Features Many Game of Thrones Connections
As a movie buff, I always notice familiar faces, and the Harry Potter films were packed with incredible talent. It’s fascinating to me how many of those actors went on to star in Game of Thrones! Natalia Tena, who played Tonks in Harry Potter, is a perfect example – she later showed up as Osha in Game of Thrones, and she was brilliant in both roles.
Given the strong talent involved in both fantasy series, we can expect this pattern to continue with HBO’s Harry Potter show. Several actors from the original Game of Thrones are now joining the Harry Potter universe, such as Anton Lesser, who played Qyburn and is now taking on the role of Garrick Ollivander, following in the footsteps of the late John Hurt.
Gemma Whelan, known for her role as Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, will play Professor Sprout. Another exciting cast addition is Leigh Gill, who previously played Bobono. Mark Mylod, who also directed episodes of Game of Thrones, is a director and executive producer for the HBO Harry Potter series. Similar to how Harry Potter once brought talent to Game of Thrones, this new series is now drawing actors and creatives from the world of Game of Thrones.
Bertie Carvel’s Harry Potter Role Signals Expansions to the Story
The upcoming HBO series based on Harry Potter will also include Bertie Carvel, an actor known for his work in Game of Thrones. He previously played Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a powerful character who served as the King’s advisor and was next in line for the throne. Carvel will now appear in the Harry Potter series in an even larger role.
In the upcoming HBO series based on Harry Potter, actor Carvel will play Cornelius Fudge, a key character from the books. Though Fudge first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the show will introduce him earlier, in Season 1. This casting connects the Harry Potter series to Game of Thrones – as Carvel also starred in Game of Thrones – and hints at exciting developments to come for fans.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m so excited about the new series! It sounds like they’re not just going to recreate the books, but actually add to the story, exploring parts we didn’t get to see in the movies. I’ve heard they’re bringing back Fudge early on, played by Mark Gatiss, and that’s a really good sign. Apparently, he was fantastic in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and they’re hinting he’ll be a much more complex, even darker, character than we saw with Robert Hardy. Honestly, it sounds like they’re aiming for the same level of detailed world-building as Game of Thrones, which, as a fan, is exactly what I want!
