Finally! ABC Perfectly Explains Why Bailey Never Felt Right On The Rookie

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 8, Episode 5 of The Rookie, titled “The Network.” After nearly five years on the show, The Rookie finally explains why Bailey Nune never fully fit in with the main characters. The show’s eighth season, which premiered in 2025-2026, has already delivered plenty of action, starting with an international case and continuing with a series of compelling investigations. Alongside the exciting cases, the season is also developing the personal lives of its cast.

Okay, so a lot’s happening with everyone on The Rookie. Grey’s starting fresh with a new job, and it’s great to see Bradford and Chen working things out both at work and in their relationship – they really deserve it! We’re getting little bits and pieces of stories for Celina, Miles, Lopez, Evers, and Nyla, which is good. But honestly, this season feels like it’s really centering on Nolan and Bailey. They finally got that honeymoon in Prague, which was adorable, but things got complicated fast. Bailey’s been offered a job in Washington DC, and it’s causing a real strain because Nolan isn’t sure he wants to move.

Nolan Lays Out How Much Bailey Changes On The Rookie Season 8, Episode 5

During the recent difficulties, Nolan clearly explained why Bailey never quite fit into the dynamic of The Rookie. They had previously agreed to work through their problems together and not make any decisions without both being in agreement. This seemed like a sensible approach for a couple who both prioritize their careers, but unfortunately, that didn’t last.

During their last talk on the show, Nolan finally confessed to Bailey that he wasn’t willing to leave his life behind and move to Washington D.C. He also explained that she seems to constantly need change, always moving on to the next thing. He reminded her of all her different jobs and hobbies – from being a firefighter and a soldier to her other interests like being an EMT and a capoeira instructor.

Change Is Good But Bailey Has Always Felt The Odd Character Out On The Rookie

Bailey’s career is remarkably diverse and her willingness to explore different paths, even after finding success, demonstrates her adaptability and skill. However, it’s been challenging to weave these varied experiences into a consistently compelling narrative.

Most characters on The Rookie have shown career growth, which allows the show to develop them and integrate them into storylines. However, Bailey frequently switches focus, making it difficult to find a consistent role for her and often making her feel disconnected from her colleagues at Mid-Wilshire PD. It often feels like the only real reason she’s involved in major cases is her connection to Nolan.

It’s unclear how things will resolve between Nolan and Bailey right now, as they both seem set in their ways. However, this conflict could be a turning point for Bailey in season 8 of The Rookie. Her husband noticing her tendency to avoid settling down might lead to her becoming more grounded, which would allow the writers to include her more consistently in future episodes.
