Spartacus: House of Ashur Gets Hopeful Season 2 Update After Rewriting History

The show Spartacus is famous for its intense violence, and the latest installment continues that tradition. Following a dramatic season finale that changed the course of history, producers are already planning what comes next.

To mark the end of the first season, the show’s creator explained what happened in the dramatic finale. They also talked about the surprising decision to kill off Caesar and shared exciting news about what to expect in season two.

The Starz historical drama, Spartacus: House of Ashur, premiered on December 5th and quickly gained popularity. With the final episode airing on February 6th, Starz hasn’t yet announced whether the show will continue.

If Starz decides to renew the show, the team is prepared. According to creator Antonio DeKnight, they’ve already completed a script for a second season.

He explained that success really depends on who’s watching, but they’re pleased with the reaction so far and are prepared to move forward.

The show’s creator said that Starz and Lionsgate have always been supportive of its mature content, never asking them to reduce the sex or violence. They made it clear from the beginning that they wanted the show to stay true to its original vision and weren’t interested in making it more mainstream. DeKnight explained that both companies understood the show wasn’t intended for all audiences and were comfortable with its approach.

The change to the story, where Ashur kills Caesar, was always the plan.

Todd Lasance, who played Caesar in the original series, couldn’t return because he’s now the lead in another show, and we’re thrilled for his success, the show’s creator explained about the NCIS: Sydney star.

DeKnight shared that he initially presented the storyline to Nick E. Tarabay, including the shocking Season 1 twist. He explained that when he told Tarabay the plan – that his character would kill Caesar and deliver the final line, ‘Hail Caesar’ – Tarabay was instantly enthusiastic. And that’s how the scene came to be.

Spartacus: House of Ashur Improved Its Score After “Woke” Accusations

The latest installment in the series successfully demonstrates how to continue a beloved story. While House of Ashur revisits the fate of the main character, who previously died, having the original creator and team involved ensured the same high quality fans expect.

The show also broke new ground by featuring the first female gladiator, a decision that proved controversial. Some viewers criticized it as being overly focused on social issues, or “woke.” Despite receiving perfect scores from critics, the show initially earned a low audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

With Season 1 now finished, the show’s ratings are in. Critics still give it a very high score of 92% based on 12 reviews, and viewer satisfaction has increased to 58%. While it’s still just shy of a positive audience score (by 2%), those who watched the whole season generally enjoyed it.

A recent viewer called the show a masterpiece, praising the new cast and the fresh perspective they brought to the series. They especially loved the fight between Ashur and Caesar, calling it cinematic and demanding a second season – even ranking it as one of the best shows of 2026, second only to Fallout. If you enjoyed the original, this is a must-watch.

Spartacus: House of Ashur is streaming on Starz.
