The creators of Star Trek quickly realized they couldn’t please all of their fans. The Star Trek community is incredibly diverse and isn’t shy about sharing their opinions on every new movie, show, or book. The latest episode of the newest series has sparked a debate: some viewers believe a particular storyline provides satisfying closure for a favorite character, while others feel it disrespects that character’s history.
The new show, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is facing a lot of controversy. Even before the first season is complete, it’s been targeted by negative reviews, largely from people claiming to be fans who are upset with the show’s diverse cast. However, the latest episode, “Series Acclimation Mil,” has drawn valid criticism for how it portrays Benjamin Sisko, a highly popular character from Deep Space Nine and a fan favorite across the Star Trek franchise.
Why Are Fans So Upset?

The latest episode seems to honor Benjamin Sisko, portrayed by Avery Brooks, as SAM investigates his destiny while serving her AI masters. However, many fans are disappointed with how it’s handled. One Reddit user expressed that the episode feels like an ironic ‘thank you’ to Brooks, given his known wishes and the established story of Deep Space Nine. Brooks was firm that Sisko would never leave his family and specifically told showrunner Ira Steven Behr he didn’t want a storyline where a Black man abandoned his pregnant partner and child, fearing it would reinforce harmful stereotypes.
Another fan pointed out that the original plan was for Sisko to be gone permanently, but Brooks successfully argued against it. They believe he should have returned while his child was young enough to have a meaningful relationship with him. Many viewers share this sentiment, and are saddened to learn that Sisko never came back from his time with the prophets, leaving Kassidy to wait for him indefinitely.
Despite the potentially disappointing storyline, it’s important to know that actor Nana Visitor (who played Sisko) fully supported it. Tawny Newsome, the showrunner for the Starfleet Academy series, explained that getting Nana’s approval and involvement was always their top priority. In fact, the idea to use a specific recording came from Cirroc Lofton, who has a close relationship with Nana. The team wanted to ensure Nana knew this storyline was meant as a tribute and celebration of his work. While the story might still be difficult for some fans, knowing Nana Visitor approved of it offers some reassurance that his legacy is being honored respectfully.
