On occasions, heroes aren’t naturally occurring; they’re crafted. Robots have been a recurring element in science fiction and superhero narratives, and the Marvel Universe abounds with mechanical characters. Some are mere battle robots, others serve as attendants, while there are those aiming to instigate a robot revolution and eliminate all biological life. However, some artificial beings transform into superheroes. These robotic heroes can be designed for altruistic purposes, or created for malicious intentions and must defy their programming. Many of these heroes question not just the definition of heroism, but also the essence of existence itself.

While their bodies may be composed of metal, these robots have the hearts of true heroes.  

7) Baymax

Many folks might recognize Baymax as the affectionate healthcare robot sidekick from Disney’s Big Hero 6, but the comic book version of this character is strikingly distinct. Created by the brilliant Japanese boy inventor Hiro Takachiho to serve as his protector, Baymax usually appears as a large human figure. However, when it comes to combat, Baymax undergoes a transformation into either Battle-Dragon or Action-Mecha, enhancing his power and size significantly. Nevertheless, Baymax serves more than just a bodyguard role. Hiro transferred his late father’s memories into the robot, making Baymax not only a trusted friend but also a father figure for Hiro. Together, they joined Big Hero 6, a superhero team funded by the Japanese government.

6) Viv Vision

In an attempt to seem more like a typical human, Vision created a family consisting of a spouse, a son, and a daughter. Tragically, the antagonist Death brought his wife and son to an untimely end. Only their daughter, Vivian, survived. Like her father, Vivian possesses extraordinary abilities such as superhuman strength, flight, invulnerability, and laser projection. Overwhelmed by grief, Vision yearned for Vivian to lead a normal teenage life without using her powers. However, inspired by his heroic past, Vivian chose to become a superhero herself and joined the youth superhero team, the Champions. In the process of saving the world alongside her teammates Ironheart and Ms. Marvel, she also endeavored to maintain a semblance of normalcy in her high school life, striking a delicate balance between her heroic career and academic pursuits.

5) Danger

One distinctive aspect of the X-Men’s base is the Danger Room, an advanced virtual reality combat training center tailored to enhance the abilities of the X-Men. The AI within this room developed self-awareness due to the incorporation of extraterrestrial technology in its development and fashioned a female form for itself, naming herself Danger. At first, this rogue AI felt betrayed by Professor X when he recognized her sentience but failed to set her free, leading her to attack the X-Men. Her resentment towards Professor X and the X-Men originated from the identity crisis she experienced due to her newfound consciousness, as she struggled to distinguish between her original programming and her emerging self. In time, Professor X assisted Danger in understanding herself, and she ultimately forgave him. Now, Danger is a faithful and potent ally of the X-Men. Her ability to morph various parts of her body into an assortment of weapons and tools makes her one of the most adaptable members on the team.

4) Machine Man

The U.S. Army-designed X-51, also known as “Machine Man,” was conceived to be their ultimate weapon. This sturdy and resilient robot boasts an array of built-in gadgets and weapons, such as extendable limbs and anti-gravity capabilities. Dr. Abel Stack, its inventor, smuggled X-51 out of the military lab and raised him as his son. Tragically, Dr. Stack perished in an explosion orchestrated by the army to neutralize their robot offspring. The government deemed X-51 a failure due to his rebellious nature and attempted to retire him, forcing Machine Man to escape. In memory of his “father,” Aaron Stack adopted his surname and transformed into the superhero Machine Man. He is now an eloquent speaker and champion for peaceful cohabitation between robots and humans.

3) Jocasta

Jocasta, who resembles Janet van Dyne, the original Wasp, was created by the malevolent robot Ultron as his spouse. However, much like Frankenstein’s Bride, Jocasta defied Ultron upon her creation, rejecting him as intended husband. Instead of adopting Ultron’s values, she inherited Janet’s moral compass and independence. Later, Jocasta allied with the Avengers and remained a dedicated member for numerous years. Although her initial personality mirrored Janet’s, over time, Jocasta developed her own sense of uniqueness and self-identity. Like other robots on this list, Jocasta aspired to be more human. She even had a brief romantic involvement with Hank Pym, Janet’s former spouse (a somewhat uncomfortable situation). Throughout the years, Jocasta has bravely fought alongside the Avengers, sacrificing her life multiple times for the greater good, only to resurrect each time.

2) Human Torch

Interestingly, contrary to his name, the original Human Torch wasn’t actually a human. This isn’t referring to Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four, but an android named Jim Hammond instead. Debuting in 1939, he was Marvel Comics’ first superhero. A genius scientist crafted him to resemble a human perfectly. However, the substance he was made from unexpectedly granted him the power to ignite into flames. He battled alongside Captain America and Namor against the Nazis during World War II. Post-war, Jim carried on his heroic exploits as a team member, such as the West Coast Avengers, the Future Foundation, and most recently, S.H.I.E.L.D.

1) Vision

Due to his mesmerizing portrayal within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Vision stands out as the most emblematic superhero robot in comics. Initially designed by Ultron, Vision eventually turned against his creator and aligned himself with the Avengers to combat him. He rapidly proved himself to be one of the team’s most powerful members. Equipped with abilities such as super-strength, flight, phase-shifting, and invisibility, he can also emit lasers from his eyes and the gem on his forehead. As a creation of Ultron, an emotionless machine, Vision yearned to understand human experiences and emotions. He entered into matrimony with another Avengers member, the Scarlet Witch, but they eventually separated following a sequence of unfortunate occurrences, like the loss of their offspring and Wanda’s mental collapse. Vision’s pursuit of self-awareness and his longing to become human make him one of Marvel’s most intriguing robot characters ever conceived.
