The 10 Best Fantasy Shows of the 2020s (So Far)

As we’re past the midpoint of the 2020s, it’s clear this decade has given us some truly exceptional fantasy TV shows. Even the good ones that don’t quite reach “best of all time” status are still impressive. While science fiction is becoming more popular, the 2020s have been a fantastic period for fantasy television. Following the success of Game of Thrones, many new series emerged, and the most successful ones demonstrate the incredible potential of the genre.

The rise of fantasy on TV has had its ups and downs, with some promising shows getting cancelled and others stalled indefinitely. However, the successful fantasy series of the 2020s demonstrate that the genre can work well on television, giving fans optimism for upcoming adaptations like Fourth Wing and The Stormlight Archive.

10) The Wheel of Time

Despite some valid criticisms, The Wheel of Time remains a standout fantasy series of the last decade. While the show doesn’t perfectly adapt Robert Jordan’s books to everyone’s satisfaction, it bravely tackles the complex story and large number of characters – something that wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago. The acting and visual effects are excellent, and if you can accept changes from the source material, it’s a truly captivating show. It’s a shame there won’t be a fourth season, especially since the series continues to improve.

9) One Piece

Okay, I’m officially hooked on the live-action One Piece on Netflix! Honestly, after so many disappointing attempts to adapt anime into live-action, this show blew me away. It’s only been one season, but it’s easily the best fantasy show Netflix has put out in the last few years. They really nailed the feel of the original anime, and a lot of that is down to the amazing cast – they are these characters! Plus, the writing is smart and it just looks fantastic. It’s a total joy to watch, and I have a feeling it’s going to become one of the best fantasy shows of the decade as it goes on.

8) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

It might be too early to declare One Piece one of the best fantasy shows of the 2020s, and it’s definitely premature to say that about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, I still believe it will be. As of today, the Game of Thrones spin-off is only three episodes into its first season (possibly four by the time you read this), but it’s already showing that compelling fantasy doesn’t always require a huge scale or world-ending conflicts. The series feels like a welcome change of pace and is a faithful adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories. It has the potential to become one of the best fantasy series of the decade, especially since it’s already so good, and the most exciting parts are still to come.

7) Interview With the Vampire

AMC’s Interview With the Vampire is a truly excellent show that deserves a wider audience. It brilliantly blends fantasy, horror, and romance into a captivating story. The series has a wonderfully dark and immersive atmosphere, and the actors are perfectly cast. The connection between the main characters is especially strong, and the show handles difficult topics with sensitivity. It’s disappointing that it hasn’t reached the same level of popularity as some other recent fantasy series.

6) Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Look, the Percy Jackson movies weren’t great, but I’m so thrilled to see Rick Riordan’s books finally get the adaptation they deserve with the Disney+ series! Honestly, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the most faithful adaptations I’ve seen in a long time. It really nails the balance – it stays true to the story and the important moments from the books, but it’s not afraid to add its own touches and even improve on things. The first two seasons are a genuinely fun ride, and I love how it’s a bit lighter in tone and really leans into that urban fantasy vibe – it feels so fresh compared to a lot of other shows coming out now. It’s maybe not as huge in scope as some other fantasy series, but I think that’s actually part of what makes it so special.

5) The Legend of Vox Machina

Prime Video’s The Legend of Vox Machina is a treat for fans of fantasy, mirroring the beloved Critical Role campaign that inspired it. The show delivers everything you want from the genre: a diverse group of heroes who become like family, complex political plots, exciting adventures, and, of course, dragons! Because it’s animated, the show isn’t limited by budget or practicality, and it’s packed with both humor and genuine emotion. It’s easily one of the best fantasy series of recent years, with very few weaknesses. The only real downside is that the episodes are a bit short—a problem that the show’s spin-off series has already solved.

4) The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has definitely sparked a lot of debate, but I really enjoy it. While it’s not a perfect adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work – and the source material is complex – I think it works well as a broader take on his world. It’s a genuinely fun series with interesting characters, strong performances (especially Charlie Vickers as Sauron), and stunning visuals. The show delivers exciting action, political maneuvering, and surprising twists – it’s the kind of epic fantasy we dreamed of seeing back in the 90s and early 2000s.

3) The Mighty Nein

Despite being a newer series and its spin-off, The Legend of Vox Machina, only having one season, The Mighty Nein has quickly become one of the best fantasy shows of the 2020s—even surpassing its original. Each episode is around 40 minutes long, which allows for deeper storytelling and character development, while still retaining everything fans loved about The Legend of Vox Machina: relatable, flawed characters, exciting adventures, and a perfect mix of humor and heartfelt moments. If it keeps getting better, The Mighty Nein is on track to become a true classic in fantasy television.

2) House of the Dragon

Currently, House of the Dragon doesn’t quite live up to Game of Thrones – and may never surpass it if recent criticisms from fans and even George R.R. Martin continue. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a poor fantasy show. In fact, it’s one of the best of the 2020s, boasting impressive production values and compelling storytelling. While not flawless, the prequel successfully captures the essence of what made the original series so popular. It shares the same complex world, political intrigue, and power struggles (though on a somewhat smaller scale). The show also delivers exciting action and utilizes strong effects to vividly bring its dragons to life. It’s a fantastic fantasy series, and if showrunner Ryan Condal is correct (according to EW), Season 3 could be massive and potentially reach the same level of success as Game of Thrones.

1) Arcane

Topping this list is Arcane, a truly exceptional show and the only one currently completed (besides the canceled Wheel of Time). Based on the League of Legends universe, it’s a compelling story exploring themes of power, wealth, and political maneuvering. The show boasts a richly detailed and original world, with characters who are both endearing and realistically flawed, and even incorporates elements of science fiction. While everything about Arcane is impressive, the animation and music are particularly outstanding, setting it apart from other fantasy series. Plus, it successfully delivers a satisfying conclusion – something many shows struggle to achieve. Whether the other shows on this list will manage the same remains to be seen.
