Often considered a groundbreaking film, Blade Runner came out in 1982 and predicted many themes we explore today. Directed by Ridley Scott, the movie takes place in a dark, futuristic Los Angeles. Rick Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is a bounty hunter tasked with finding and eliminating incredibly realistic robots called Replicants. The mission becomes more difficult when he develops a romantic relationship with Rachel, a Replicant herself.

When Blade Runner first came out, audiences didn’t love it and it didn’t do well in theaters. It was a bit too long and the story was confusing. However, over time, different versions of the film were released on home video, which sparked more interest and built a dedicated fanbase. Eventually, Blade Runner gained a reputation as a classic science fiction film and is now considered one of the best of the 20th century.

Interestingly, the same thing happened with Blade Runner 2049 in 2017. Although it didn’t do well in theaters initially, it’s now widely considered a classic and has gained a strong following.

Looking back, Atlantis was a remarkably inventive film, showcasing animation techniques that were truly advanced for its time. The movie’s often-overlooked final scene remains one of the most complex animated shots ever created, and it still demonstrates the film’s groundbreaking nature even today, twenty-five years later.

The Shawshank Redemption Bombed Against Stiff Competition

I truly believe Frank Darabont created something special with The Shawshank Redemption. It’s one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s work ever! The movie, released in 1994 and based on King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, tells the story of Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, who arrives at Shawshank State Prison. Over the years, I watched him form an incredible friendship with Red, another inmate, and subtly begin to transform the prison, all while secretly planning his escape. It’s just a phenomenal film.

Today, it’s hard to think of The Shawshank Redemption as anything less than a classic. But when it was released in 1994, audiences didn’t respond well. Facing competition from popular films like Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, it didn’t perform well in theaters and was considered a failure. Over the past thirty-two years, however, this adaptation of Stephen King’s work has become widely regarded as one of the best movies ever made.

Citizen Kane Is Now Considered One of the Greatest Films of All Time

The 1941 film Citizen Kane tells the story of a reporter investigating the life of Charles Foster Kane, a powerful newspaper publisher, after his death. Through interviews with people who knew Kane, the reporter uncovers details about his past, and the meaning behind Kane’s final word, “Rosebud,” begins to emerge.

Despite being considered a cinematic masterpiece today, Citizen Kane wasn’t successful when it first came out, earning less than $1 million in theaters. This was mainly because the film’s main character, Charles Foster Kane, was heavily inspired by powerful newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst. Hearst was so worried about how he was portrayed that he pressured many theaters not to show the movie, which severely limited its release.

Over the eighty-five years since its release, the initial controversy surrounding the film has faded, and viewers now recognize Citizen Kane as a powerful and enduring story. Its innovative visuals and exceptional script were ahead of their time, and today, it’s considered a classic.
