Even though the year just started, Marvel Comics is already hinting at a major upcoming storyline. The Marvel universe has been changing a lot lately, especially with Doctor Strange no longer being Earth’s main magic protector. While Doctor Doom briefly took on that role, Scarlet Witch now holds the title, but in an unusual way – she was chosen by magical artifacts, not the traditional magical beings. This decision is causing conflict, as the Vishanti believe Agatha Harkness should be the one with the power instead of Wanda.
Scarlet Witch becoming Sorcerer Supreme hasn’t been easy, with a lot of challenges right from the beginning. At the same time, more and more magical problems are popping up in other Marvel comics, leading fans to wonder if magic itself is becoming unpredictable. Now, Marvel has revealed a new hint that seems to confirm those suspicions.
The Age of Magic Has Returned

A key piece of the puzzle appears in Colossus & Magik #1, a compelling story by Ashley Allen and Germán Peralta, part of the “Shadows of Tomorrow” series. The issue follows Illyana and Piotr Rasputin as they return to Russia, where Colossus finds himself hunted by various supernatural beings. They were sent on this mission by Lady Midday, a mythical creature who explains that she and other creatures of the night have been in hiding for decades. Now, however, magic is returning, and they’re starting to reappear.
This event happens at the same time as the comic Uncanny X-Men #23, which is part of the “Shadows of Tomorrow” storyline. In that issue, another group of X-Men, located in Louisiana, faces a comparable issue: a collection of supernatural beings, led by Elsa Bloodstone, who are weary of remaining hidden. As Elsa explains, they desire a return to public life, wanting access to places like ballrooms, nightclubs, and opera houses – or, for their leader, more humble but refined establishments like juke joints and restaurants. Ultimately, their main goal is to be able to move freely in daylight, reclaiming the power and status they once held. They set their sights on New Orleans as the place to achieve this.
Similar to Elsa Bloodstone, Lady Midday is also taking orders from someone else. She works for a mysterious being known only as “the Immortal,” who granted her control over Russian farming villages. In return, she must deliver anyone who shows signs of magical ability. It seems several powerful magic users – or perhaps other powerful beings – are now making their move, each trying to control different areas. The Immortal has taken Russia, while another is attempting to establish a kingdom in New Orleans.
What Does the Age of Magic Mean for Marvel Comics?

The latest issue of Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant #1, by Murewa Ayodele and Federica Mancin, offers another big hint about the upcoming Age of Magic (and is the third installment of the “Shadows of Tomorrow” series this week). Like previous stories, it involves supernatural dangers, stemming from the recent “Thunder War” storyline. However, the central theme of magic continues, and this time, the events have caught the attention of Scarlet Witch, who is now the Sorcerer Supreme.
It’s difficult to picture a story about a new era of magic without the Sorcerer Supreme appearing. However, the idea that Scarlet Witch is now in that position during a time of growing mystical chaos – with supernatural forces becoming more visible – is incredibly exciting. We don’t yet know if this ‘Age of Magic’ will primarily affect the X-Men comics, or become a major event across all Marvel titles, but both possibilities are appealing to fans of both the X-Men and Scarlet Witch.
