As a horror fan, I’ve seen a lot of truly unsettling movies, but every now and then one comes along that just completely messes with your head. This new film I stumbled across on streaming is definitely one of those. It’s a 2014 release from A24, and honestly, it’s one of the most bizarre and disturbing body horror films I’ve seen in years. Seriously, you need to be prepared for some seriously unsettling stuff – it’s not for the faint of heart!
Let’s clear things up: we’re discussing the movie Tusk. This darkly comedic horror film, directed by Kevin Smith, started with a strange Craigslist ad. It’s about a self-absorbed podcaster who gets kidnapped by a peculiar old sailor. Over the course of the movie, the sailor surgically turns him into a walrus, complete with tusks! Now, you can stream this oddball film more easily and affordably than ever, as it became available on Tubi’s free streaming service on February 1st.
Kevin Smith’s Tusk Is an Unforgettable WTF Horror-Comedy That Needs a Sequel
“Tusk” is a film that will likely leave you speechless and questioning what you’ve just seen. It’s a strange and unsettling experience, following Michael Parks’ character as he transforms a man into a horrifying creature, and Justin Long’s character as he desperately tries to survive. While the physical transformation Long undergoes is reminiscent of films like “The Human Centipede,” it’s ultimately used to explore deeper themes about what makes a person monstrous, the dangers of vanity, and the struggle to maintain one’s identity.
It’s hard to describe Tusk – you really have to see it to understand what it’s like. As one of A24’s earliest forays into horror, along with films like Enemy and Under the Skin, it definitely stood out. While critics and audiences weren’t particularly impressed at the time (with scores of 45% and 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively), Tusk hinted at A24’s willingness to take risks on unique, strange, and ambitious genre films – a quality the studio is now known for.
The movie has become a beloved cult hit, especially for fans of body horror, and many are hoping for a sequel. Director Smith had once mentioned a possible follow-up aiming for a 2024 release, but that didn’t happen, and there haven’t been any updates since.
Other Horror Movies Now on Tubi
Tubi kicked off February by significantly expanding its selection of free horror movies. They added popular titles like Anaconda, The Fly, the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, and Insidious: The Last Key. Viewers can also now stream other scary movies such as Dark Harvest, Escape Room, Slayers, and When A Stranger Calls, all of which were added on February 1st.
