One Piece Reveals Brook and Gunko’s Shocking Past After Their Reunion

Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga. The story of One Piece returns to the intense conflict in Elbaph, where the Holy Knights have decided to attack the island. The Giants were unprepared for this assault, as they were currently welcoming the Straw Hat Pirates. Prior to the recent flashback, it was revealed that Gunko, a key member of the Holy Knights responsible for kidnapping children and holding them hostage, shares a history with Brook. She’s shown to be a fan of his music and displays a completely different personality when not under Imu’s control. A brief scene shows Brook holding Gunko’s hand as a child, leading fans to speculate about their connection.

The recent flashback confirmed that Gunko has been working for Imu for decades. Now that Harald’s story is complete, the manga is poised to reveal answers to major mysteries in this part of the story. Immediately after seeing Gunko, Brook hurries to find her, leaving his crew worried about him. Chapter 1173 showed us events from the past, giving us a better understanding of Gunko and her motivations.

One Piece Reveals Brook’s Hatred Towards Gunko

In Chapter 1173, Brook discovers Gunko and affectionately calls her Princess Shuri. He’s shocked she’s still alive after so long, but the resemblance is striking. He considers that she might be related to the princess he once knew, as the princess would be around 80 years old now. Despite the time that has passed, Gunko shares the same distinctive features as the princess – most notably, her blue hair and different colored eyes.

It’s easy for Brook to figure out Gunko is a Holy Knight and a fan of his music. However, he desperately avoids her, remembering she killed his father – a man he deeply respected. Gunko is actually under Imu’s control, and she’s fighting to regain her memories. For a brief moment, her mind clears, but she quickly reverts to attacking Brook with a weak blow, which he easily deflects. As she tries to speak to him, Imu gets angry at her resistance and forcefully reasserts control over her.

I’m really hooked on what’s happening with Brook and Gunko! It’s frustrating to watch, because Gunko is clearly trying to explain things, but she just can’t get the words out. It feels like they’re stuck in a loop – they won’t be able to truly connect until Imu gives Gunko the okay, and with the current battle raging, that doesn’t seem likely anytime soon. I’m especially excited to learn more about Gunko’s backstory – specifically, what drove her to kill her father. I have a feeling it’s all connected to Imu and the Holy Knights, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
