On a 2016 episode of the BBC drama Call the Midwife, Violet and Fred face a problem when customers who bought food from their shop become sick after a family gathering. The illness affects everyone who attended the celebration, and the cause is a mystery.
Meanwhile, Fred is overseeing plumbers working on the old lead pipes in Cyril’s apartment. At the same time, a pregnant woman has asked to give birth at home, wanting to respect the customs of both her family and her husband’s.
I was so relieved to hear Timothy passed his medical exams! He’s such a bright and capable person. But he’s really wrestling with what kind of doctor he wants to be – he can’t decide between becoming a general practitioner or a surgeon, and I know he’s putting a lot of thought into it.
Sister Julienne and Sister Veronica also reach decisions about their respective moral quandaries.
Season 15 of Call the Midwife is a landmark event for the show, as it marks the end of a significant period. Creator Heidi Thomas shared this at the TopMob Covers Party 2026, also noting that a prequel series and a feature film are currently being developed.
Although the show is evolving, Thomas confirmed she plans to stay involved, despite ongoing interest from streaming services.
Honestly, I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea of walking away. Why risk everything on a long shot? For years, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a platform and, frankly, the best in the business to help me share my voice. This isn’t just a career, it’s been half my life, and I have no intention of letting that go.
Season 15 will bring back many beloved characters, and also introduce a variety of new faces, each with their own unique story.
So, for the full details on the Call the Midwife cast, read on.

Helen George plays Trixie Aylward

Trixie Aylward is a skilled and valued nurse at Nonnatus House. She’s a recovering alcoholic, and past struggles with alcohol resurfaced when she and her husband faced financial difficulties in their marriage.
After season 13, Trixie moved to New York with her husband, Matthew, who was starting a new business. She now splits her time between New York and Poplar, where she’s taken on a leadership position at Nonnatus House, though she still enjoys working as a midwife.
Helen George is best known for her long-running role in Call the Midwife, having been part of the show since it began. She’s also appeared in other popular TV series like Red Dwarf, Hotel Babylon, and Doctors, as well as the film Nativity Rocks!. In 2015, she competed on Strictly Come Dancing with Aljaz Skorjanec, finishing in sixth place. Interestingly, she met her partner, Jack Ashton, while working on Call the Midwife – he played Reverend Tom until season 7. They have two daughters together, named Wren and Lark.
Stephen McGann plays Patrick Turner

Patrick Turner is the local doctor in Poplar and works alongside the nurses at Nonnatus House. He’s a dedicated physician who works very hard for his patients. He is married to Shelagh, and together they have four children.
Besides Call the Midwife, Stephen McGann has appeared in other roles. Interestingly, he’s married to the show’s creator and writer, Heidi Thomas, and is the brother of Doctor Who actor Paul McGann. Like his character Dr. Turner, McGann has a background in science, holding a Master’s degree in Science Communication and having written a book called Flesh and Blood which explores his family’s personal and medical history. He also previously played Sean Reynolds on Emmerdale.
Laura Main plays Shelagh Turner

Shelagh Turner was first introduced as Sister Bernadette, a nun. She later left the religious order to marry Dr. Turner. Together, they have a family of four children – both adopted and biological. Shelagh still maintains a close relationship with Nonnatus House, frequently assisting as a midwife or providing support whenever needed.
Okay, so you’re wondering what else Laura Main has been up to besides her well-known roles? Well, she actually started really young, appearing in a production of The Sound of Music when she was just eleven! Most of her work has been on stage, and more recently she toured the UK as Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical. On the small screen, I remember her as DC Alison Bain in ITV’s Murder City, and she also had a notable part as Rebecca Howlett in the mini-series The Mill.
Jenny Agutter plays Sister Julienne

Sister Julienne is the leader of Nonnatus House. The midwives who work with her deeply respect her decisions and rely on her advice. While Mother Mildred is her overall superior, Sister Julienne is in charge of the nuns and the daily operations within Nonnatus House.
Jenny Agutter started acting as a child in films like The Railway Children and East of Sudan. She’s won both an Emmy (for The Snow Goose in 1971) and a BAFTA (for the 1977 film Equus). Throughout her career, she’s appeared in well-known movies such as Logan’s Run, Amy, and An American Werewolf in London. After stepping away from Hollywood in the 1990s, she returned to Britain and even revisited The Railway Children, this time playing the mother in a 2000 television version. More recently, she’s been in films like Sometimes Always Never (with Bill Nighy), Queen of the Desert, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers Assemble.
Linda Bassett plays Phyllis Crane

Phyllis Crane is a senior midwife known for being tough but also having a sharp sense of humor. She’s a hardworking and devoted professional who always puts her patients first.
Linda Bassett is a well-known actress with a diverse range of roles. She received a BAFTA nomination for her part as Ella Khan in the 1999 film East Is East, and later returned to the role in the sequel West Is West. Her other notable performances include Malka Rosen in Spies of Warsaw, Queenie in Lark Rise to Candleford, and Mrs. Smike in The Life and Adventures of Nick Nickleby. She’s also appeared in films like The Reader, Calendar Girls, and Sense & Sensibility, and recently had a role in Strike: Troubled Blood.
Judy Parfitt plays Sister Monica Joan

Sister Monica Joan is a beloved character who has been with Call the Midwife since the very beginning, welcoming viewers into Nonnatus House. A pioneering midwife, she’s now retired and living with dementia. Her former colleagues lovingly care for her at Nonnatus House, though her condition can sometimes be challenging. Sister Monica Joan struggles with her memory loss and limitations, and deeply desires to feel like she still has a purpose.
Judy Parfitt is known for her roles in several popular shows and films. She received a BAFTA nomination for her performances as Maria Thins in Girl With A Pearl Earring and Mildred Layton in The Jewel In The Crown. More recently, she’s appeared in Up the Women, The Game, and Little Dorrit, where she played Mrs. Clennam.
Rebecca Gethings plays Sister Veronica

Sister Veronica is a new health visitor at Nonnatus House, first appearing in season 12. She previously worked in Hong Kong and, according to actress Gethings, isn’t always great at understanding social cues. While she often unintentionally causes trouble or upsets people, it always comes from a good place and with good intentions.
Besides her current role, Rebecca Gethings has also acted in “David Brent: Life on the Road” and the historical drama “The Serpent Queen”.
Renee Bailey plays Joyce Highland

Joyce Highland is a midwife who started working at Nonnatus House in season 13. Originally from Trinidad, she escaped an abusive marriage. Those who know her describe her as a dedicated, intelligent, and compassionate person. Last season, her job was put at risk when a prejudiced woman filed a complaint against her.
Renee Bailey has also appeared in the BBC/Netflix teen thriller Rebel Cheer Squad and the BBC musical drama Mood.
Natalie Quarry plays Rosalind Clifford

Rosalind Clifford is one of the midwives at Nonnatus House. She’s often seen as innocent and trusting, but also has a strong and determined side. She quickly connected with Joyce and is currently in a relationship with Cyril.
Besides her current role, Natalie Quarry has also been in an episode of the TV show Doctors and in the series Atlanta created by Donald Glover.
Molly Vevers plays Sister Catherine

Sister Catherine is a new nun at Nonnatus House. She dedicated herself to God, which caused a rift with her family who initially disapproved of her calling. Thankfully, she has since made amends and reconnected with her sister.
What else has Molly Vevers been in? She’s best known for The Rig.
Georgie Glen plays Miss Higgins

Miss Higgins works as the receptionist at Dr. Turner’s office. She can seem strict and a bit bossy, but she’s actually a very kind person. Over time, she’s become close friends with Nurse Phyllis Crane. Recently, she reconnected with the son she gave up for adoption years ago, and learned she also has a grandson.
You know that feeling when you know a face but can’t place it? That’s Georgie Glen for me! She’s been popping up in so many great things lately. I recently recognized her as Princess Diana’s grandmother, Lady Fermoy, in The Crown, but she was also Lady Grenford in Hetty Feather, Pat in Sally4Ever, and Sue in Behind Her Eyes. Going further back, she played Rose Kennedy in Jackie – that movie was incredible – and even the Abbess in Les Misérables! And if you’re a fan of British TV, you probably remember her as Audrey McFall, the head of history in Waterloo Road. Seriously, this woman has had a fantastic career!
Fenella Woolgar plays Sister Hilda

Sister Hilda used to work at Nonnatus House, but she left during season 11 and now lives at the Mother House.
If you enjoy Fenella Woolgar’s work, you might also recognize her from shows like The Deal, The Buccaneers, and Home Fires.
Zephryn Taitte plays Cyril Robinson

Let me tell you about Cyril Robinson! He’s a lovely man originally from Guyana, and he works for the council, though he’s thinking about what else he might do. I first saw him on screen when he was fixing Nurse Crane’s car – and you could instantly tell he was smitten with Lucille Anderson! They took things slowly, and their wedding in the 2021 Christmas special was beautiful. Sadly, Lucille had to return to Jamaica and they ended up divorcing. But I’m so happy to see he’s moved on and is now really happy with Rosalind – their relationship is going really well!
Zephryn Taitte is known for his role as Dorian in the TV series Brothers with No Game. He’s also made appearances in The Hour and Doctors. Beyond television, Taitte has performed on stage in productions like Nora: A Doll’s House, Trust, and The Tempest.
Annabelle Apsion plays Violet Buckle

I’m a big fan of the show, and I’ve always been fascinated by Violet Buckle! She’s such a character. For those who might not remember, she married Fred back in season 4 – she was a widow and didn’t have any kids of her own. Then, Reggie became part of the family in season 6. On top of everything, she’s a successful businesswoman, running her own haberdashery, and she’s even the mayor of Tower Hamlets! She really does it all.
Annabelle Apsion is known for her roles as Monica Gallagher in Shameless and Joy Wilton in Soldier Soldier. More recently, she’s appeared in several popular TV shows, including Torvill & Dean (as Betty Calloway in 2018), The Village, Holby City, The Halcyon, Father Brown, and Doc Martin.
Cliff Parisi plays Fred Buckle

Fred Buckle is a helpful jack-of-all-trades who now runs a shop. He’s married to Violet, and together they’re raising their son, Reggie, who has Down’s Syndrome. The midwives know they can always rely on Fred, and he’s also known around Poplar as the local Santa Claus.
Cliff Parisi is best known for playing Rick “Minty” Peterson on EastEnders, a role he had for eight years. More recently, he’s appeared in shows like Hollyoaks and Midsomer Murders, and the series Shakespeare & Hathaway. He also participated in the 2019 season of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, but was eliminated relatively early.
Daniel Laurie plays Reggie Jackson

Reggie Jackson first appeared on Call the Midwife in season six. He was orphaned after his mother’s death, and the nuns and local community rallied to care for him. Reggie has Down’s Syndrome and is now being lovingly raised by Fred and Violet Buckle, who are his guardians and provide a warm, affectionate family environment.
Daniel Laurie is known for his roles in several TV shows and adaptations. He recently appeared as Sheemie in “The Dark Tower,” Adam Beecher in “Vera,” and Zach in “Finding Alice” with Keeley Hawes. He also played Jamie in the TV series “Stella” in 2016, and starred as the lead in the Radio 4 adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Barnaby Rudge” in 2014.
Christopher Harper plays Geoffrey Franklin

Who is Geoffrey Franklin? Trixie’s brother. Geoffrey is always the life and soul of the party.
What else has been in Christopher Harper? You might know him from Coronation Street.
Max Macmillan plays Timothy Turner

Timothy Turner is the oldest son of Patrick and Shelagh. He completed medical school and has returned to help out at the surgery.
What else has Max Macmillan been in? This is his most notable role to date.
April Rae Hoang plays May

May Tang was introduced in the 2018 Call the Midwife Christmas special. She arrived at Nonnatus House as one of a group of Chinese child refugees brought to the UK for adoption, accompanied by Mother Mildred, played by Miriam Margolyes.
Unfortunately, the planned adoption for May didn’t work out, and her family couldn’t take her home. Patrick and Shelagh Turner stepped in as foster parents and eventually decided to adopt her. There was a complication in season nine when May’s birth mother reappeared and didn’t want to give up her rights, but that situation has since been resolved. May is very close friends with her sister, Angela, who is around the same age.
What else has April Rae Hoang been in? Call the Midwife is her first on-screen appearance.
Alice Brown plays Angela Turner

Angela Turner is the daughter of Patrick and Shelagh Turner. She was adopted as a baby during season four and gained an older brother, Timothy. The family has since grown to include another baby brother and an adopted sister named May.
People are curious about what other roles Alice Brown has played. She’s been portraying baby Angela Turner since she was just eight months old. Her father explained to TopMob that she got the part because her mother knew someone working on the show, and the timing lined up with a new storyline. It really happened by chance.
He stated he has absolutely no desire for his child to continue acting. He plans to playfully embarrass her with the footage when she’s older, and is glad she’s earned a good amount of money that will be saved for her future.
Additional cast includes:
- Edward Shaw (I, Jack Wright) plays Edward ‘Teddy’ Turner.
- Linda Hargreaves (Doctors) plays Mrs Wallace.
Who is the Call the Midwife narrator?

Dame Vanessa Redgrave serves as the voice of Jennifer Worth.
Jennifer Worth is the central character in the first three seasons of Call the Midwife, portrayed by Jessica Raine as a young nurse. After leaving the show, her character married Phillip Worth. As Jennifer Worth, she remains connected to her colleagues at Nonnatus House and provides narration for the series as an older woman, looking back on the events.
Dame Vanessa Redgrave is a highly acclaimed actress, having won almost every major acting award – an Academy Award, a BAFTA, two Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony Award. She’s appeared in many well-known films, including Behind the Mask, Julia, Isadora, Mary Queen of Scots, A Man for All Seasons, Camelot, Mission: Impossible, Atonement, Coriolanus, and The Butler.
