Super Mario Galaxy Officially Brings Back a Villain Not used In 37 Years

A new Super Mario Galaxy movie is scheduled for release in 2026, and it will feature a return of the characters from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, plus some exciting additions from other popular Mario games. Fans are especially thrilled about the appearance of Yoshi, who briefly appeared after the credits of the first film. Other new characters include Bowser Jr., Bowser’s son seeking revenge, and Princess Rosalina, the caretaker of the Lumas. Recently, another well-known villain from the Mario universe has been confirmed to join the cast of the upcoming movie.

As a huge Mario fan, I was completely surprised by the latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie! They brought back Mouser, a villain we haven’t seen in about 37 years! For those who don’t remember, Mouser was a pesky little mouse with sunglasses from Super Mario Bros. 2. He showed up right beside Peach as she was getting ready to fight Birdo, which was a fun throwback. In the original game, he’d throw bombs at Mario and Luigi, trying to stop them in their tracks. He even made a quick appearance the next year on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! as one of King Koopa’s henchmen, but honestly, he’s been missing in action ever since. It’s awesome to see Illumination digging deep into Mario history!

What All Can Fans Expect From The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

The initial trailers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie suggest it will include many more hidden references for video game fans compared to the first movie. One trailer scene shows Princess Peach and Toad landing on a planet filled with classic Super Mario Bros. enemies. Inside the bar they visit, you can spot a wide variety of villains, including Shy Guys, Chargin’ Chuck, and Moneybags. It’s also no surprise to see characters like Mouser making an appearance.

The trailer included a glimpse of the Ukiki monkey from Super Mario 64, and also showed Tostarena Town from Super Mario Odyssey. Mario and Luigi will have new costumes, and Yoshi even gets a motorcycle! These trailers likely only reveal a fraction of the hidden references and surprises. With so many Easter eggs and secret characters, fans will probably need to watch the movie multiple times to find them all.

Even though Donkey Kong was a highlight of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, he probably won’t appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The sequel has a lot of new characters – including Bowser’s son as a main villain and the introduction of Princess Rosalina – and Donkey Kong doesn’t seem to fit the new storyline. Plus, there’s talk of a separate Donkey Kong movie being made, so the studio might be holding him back to build excitement for that project.

One of the biggest highlights of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the introduction of Yoshi. While the movie updates Yoshi’s character slightly from the games, his look is still based on the popular video game design. Trailers reveal he’s adorable, but also has a big appetite – we even see him eat a bad guy! It doesn’t appear Yoshi will have a voice actor, so he likely won’t be speaking much, if at all, in the film.
