While Pokemon Legends: Z-A didn’t introduce any brand new Pokemon, it significantly expanded the Mega Evolution feature, adding over 30 new Mega Evolutions throughout the game and its downloadable content. These new designs have now made their way into the Pokemon Trading Card Game with the Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes set. The artwork for these new Megas is impressive, both in the special illustration rares and the standard ex cards. I recently had the opportunity to open some packs to see how rare they are to pull.
The Pokémon Company sent me some products from their new Ascended Heroes line to review. I opened 37 packs from the Mega Evolution – Ascended Heroes collection, and while it’s possible to calculate the odds of getting rare cards, seeing them in person gives you a better feel for how often they appear. The Ascended Heroes set features 13 different Mega ex cards, including 8 brand new ones from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Each of these powerful cards has multiple versions, including beautifully illustrated special rares. However, finding them in packs will be a challenge.
Megas Are Fairly Rare in Ascended Heroes, But The Odds Seem to Favor Z-A

With only 13 Mega Evolution ex cards available in the Ascended Heroes set, which has over 290 cards total, they’re quite hard to find. I opened 37 packs and only pulled these ex Megas:
- Mega Dragonite
- Mega Hawlucha
- Mega Eelektross
- Mega Froslass
I wasn’t incredibly lucky with my Chase card pulls overall, but I had good luck finding cards featuring the new Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. I was hoping for the new designs, and I managed to get those, which is great! I also pulled a Mega Lucario ex, but that came from the Poster Collection, so it wasn’t a surprise.
Okay, so about the shiny new cards – Mega Hawlucha and Mega Dragonite are both super rare, like the highest tier of attack cards. Mega Eelektross and Mega Froslass are a bit more common, those are the double-rare holographic ones. Honestly, it’s pretty much what I expect from a new Pokemon TCG set. Getting the absolute rarest cards is still a long shot, but if I crack open a few packs, I’m hoping to pull at least one or two of these new Mega Evolutions.
ex Pull Rates for Ascended Heroes Are Decent Overall

I was counting up all the new Mega cards I got, and something else really caught my eye. I actually pulled a surprisingly good number of ex cards – 10 in total from just 37 packs! That’s almost one ex card for every 3 or 4 packs I opened. It got me thinking, if my experience is anything to go by, ex cards might be a little easier to find in the Mega Evolutions – Ascended Heroes set compared to the Scarlet & Violet sets. I usually see about 1 ex card for every 5 or 6 packs from those older sets. So, if you’re hoping to find some strong ex cards for competitive play, Ascended Heroes might be worth checking out. But, I have to say, 37 packs isn’t a huge number, so I could just have been really lucky with my pulls!
Generally, the chances of getting most cards seem pretty standard. I personally opened some packs and got 2 full-art Ultra Rare cards and 5 Illustration Rares (including 2 Salazzle cards), but didn’t find any of the special illustrated rares. If you’re looking for ex cards and hoping to get some of the new Pokemon Legends: Z-A Megas, your chances are decent if you can find a few packs. However, getting the most valuable and sought-after cards in the set is still quite difficult.
