Fans of Call the Midwife thought Trixie and Matthew’s marriage was going well, even though they were living apart.
In the season finale, Matthew moved from London to New York to turn his career around after racking up over £250,000 in debt and losing his position at his father’s company. Trixie initially planned to stay in London, but later joined him in America for a while, eventually dividing her time between her job in Poplar and living in the States.
Recently, she’s stayed in London, where she’s needed due to the increasing concerns about the future of Nonnatus House, and it’s beginning to wear her down.
When Nurse Crane realized Trixie hadn’t come down for tea and biscuits with everyone else, she went to check on her. Trixie seemed unusually sad and withdrawn in her room.
“I just can’t relax, Phyllis,” she confessed. Nurse Crane pointed out that her restlessness was bound to make her feel worn out and stressed.
“I’m not the only one falling apart,” Trixie said, admitting her marriage was struggling due to the current situation.

However, that still hasn’t happened, and it seems less and less likely now. Last year, Rix publicly shared his complaints about leaving the show, but a show representative strongly dismissed them.
Considering what Trixie recently said, it’s difficult not to think a divorce might be coming.
He focuses on his own work, and I’m dealing with this,” she said, clearly worried about what the future holds for Nonnatus House.
Nurse Crane responded with worry, as Trixie wondered if everything was about to finish. She seemed to be saying it as if the current situation wasn’t bad enough already.
Nurse Crane went on, “If you’re keeping something to yourself, Trixie, that’s fine, and I won’t push you to tell me.” She added, “There’s always been a constant worry hanging over Nonnatus House during my time here, but we’ve always managed to overcome challenges and help mothers have their babies.”
She’s not wrong there.

Now that season 15 has ended, Trixie might get to spend some much-needed time with her husband, Matthew. With a new series set during World War II and a movie planned for 1972 – which hasn’t announced its actors yet – there could be a great chance for them to reconnect before filming begins on season 16.
Look, cutting out mentions of Trixie’s marriage makes sense – it’s a constant reminder of a situation that’s clearly complicated. But honestly, it comes at a cost. We lose all the fun, dynamic moments between Trixie and Matthew, and that’s a real shame. Those interactions were a highlight, and now they’re just gone.
It seems highly probable that Matthew and his partner will split up permanently – a breakup that felt likely from the moment he departed. The show’s creator, Heidi Thomas, has indicated that season 15 marks the end of a chapter, and while changes are expected, this outcome appears very likely.
Call the Midwife season 15 continues on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday at 8pm.
