Even though Power Rangers is getting a new reboot on Disney+ after 30 years on television, one particular series, which originally aired 28 years ago, feels like it could have been the perfect ending to the entire franchise. There was a time when the show was expected to conclude, and this one installment was designed to be a spectacular finale.
This week marks the 28th anniversary of the premiere of Power Rangers in Space on Fox Kids, February 6, 1998. As the fifth installment in the Power Rangers series, it was initially intended as the concluding chapter for the franchise, due to declining ratings. Power Rangers in Space brought a six-season storyline, character development, and the overarching Zordon saga to a close, and remains a fitting end to the original era of the show, even today.
Power Rangers in Space Was the Beginning of the End 28 Years Ago Today

Unlike previous seasons of Power Rangers, Power Rangers in Space began with a dramatic and unusual setup. Power Rangers Turbo ended with the villains wreaking havoc and completely eliminating the Turbo Rangers’ powers. Facing near-certain destruction on Earth, the Rangers were forced to flee the planet on a rocket, heading for an unknown destination.
Continuing the story from Power Rangers Turbo, Power Rangers in Space follows T.J., Carlos, Cassie, and Ashley as they encounter a new Red Ranger named Andros in space. They gain new powers to battle a new wave of enemies, including the dangerous Astronema. This series marked the end of the original Zordon saga and spent a lot of time tying up loose ends from previous seasons, building towards a final battle to save Earth.
After that, Power Rangers in Space reached its dramatic conclusion, raising the stakes higher than ever before. Previous episodes had threatened towns and cities, but the finale, “Countdown to Destruction,” was the first time the entire Earth was at risk. The Rangers couldn’t handle the threat alone and needed support, which they received from people all over Earth uniting to help. This felt especially meaningful for longtime fans who had been following the series since the beginning.
What Is Power Rangers in Space’s Legacy 28 Years Later?
It’s clear now that Power Rangers didn’t end with this season. Leading up to it, there was a sense this would be a big farewell, as ratings had declined. However, Power Rangers in Space became a huge hit, leading to many more seasons. These later seasons moved away from the original Zordon-era storyline and allowed for greater creativity with characters and settings.
Back in the day, Power Rangers in Space would have been an ideal ending to the whole series. It kept everything connected to the original storyline that fans had followed since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and the creators really went all out to make it feel special and conclusive. Interestingly, it was a big departure from the Japanese show it was based on, Denji Sentai Megaranger. That series wasn’t about space at all – it focused on high school students battling in a virtual world.
This season got the Power Rangers franchise off to an incredibly strong start and still boasts one of the most memorable finales ever. Many fans consider it a perfect ending to the series, even though it wasn’t the last one. Compared to later seasons, it remains a remarkably complete and satisfying experience.
