EastEnders reveals life-changing epilepsy storyline for Nugget Gulati after seizure

An upcoming storyline on EastEnders will reveal that Davinder Gulati, nicknamed Nugget (played by Juhaim Rasul Choudhury), has developed epilepsy due to a recent head injury.

The teenager was injured after a fight with his father, Ravi Thiara, who was using drugs at the time.

After Nicola and Harry Mitchell secretly drugged him, he tumbled into the garage pit and started experiencing vivid, disturbing hallucinations of his deceased father, Nish Panesar.

He attacked the villain, but didn’t realize Nugget was the one in danger.

During today’s driving lesson, the young driver appeared to lose focus. Ravi cautioned him to pay attention, not realizing he was experiencing a brief lapse in consciousness due to a seizure.

Things got really tough for Nugget when his parents started fighting. He got confused all over again, and sadly, it triggered another seizure. It was heartbreaking to watch.

As the story unfolds, he undergoes hospital tests and receives an epilepsy diagnosis. The narrative then focuses on his adjustment to living with the condition and how it affects his everyday routines.

EastEnders’ Executive Producer, Ben Wadey, explained that the show is dedicated to telling Nugget’s story truthfully and with care. To make sure they get the details right and accurately show the difficulties a young person might experience after being diagnosed with epilepsy, they consulted with the Epilepsy Society.

Clare Pelham, the CEO of the charity, explained that around one in one hundred people live with epilepsy, but many are reluctant to talk about it due to social stigma. She said they were very pleased that the soap opera EastEnders consulted with them to ensure Nugget’s storyline about epilepsy was realistic and accurate.

EastEnders has a strong history of addressing difficult topics. Nugget’s storyline, which realistically portrays seizures and how to help someone with epilepsy, has the potential to start important discussions, lessen the shame surrounding the condition, and raise awareness.
