Daredevil: Born Again Season 2’s New Trailer Secretly Sets Up a New MCU Vigilante

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is coming soon, and it looks like the show is quietly laying the groundwork for a new masked hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU already has many superheroes, especially at the street level with characters like Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Ms. Marvel. But it seems we might be getting another hero joining their ranks, possibly as part of a group connected to Daredevil.

In the final moments of Born Again season one, Daredevil realizes he needs to build a team to take on Mayor Fisk and his task force designed to stop vigilantes. Fisk has already rounded up many of New York’s heroes and locked them up, including The Punisher. It seems likely that rescuing these captured heroes will be a key focus of season two, and the initial trailer suggests just that.

The Swordsman Could Join Daredevil’s Army In Born Again Season 2

Jack Duquesne, also known as the Swordsman, first appeared in the Hawkeye TV series, portrayed by Tony Dalton. While the comic book version of Swordsman is usually an opponent of Hawkeye, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on the character draws more from storylines where he’s a hero. In season one of Daredevil: Born Again, Swordsman appears as a wealthy competitor of Fisk, and by the end of the season, he’s imprisoned in one of Fisk’s facilities for vigilantes.

The first preview for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 suggests that Swordsman might play a more significant part this time. The preview shows Daredevil in the holding cells where Fisk’s captured enemies are kept, but the cells are all empty. This likely means Daredevil will free these vigilantes in the new season, including Swordsman.

Fans are wondering who will join Daredevil in his fight, and Swordsman seems like a strong possibility. If Daredevil rescues Swordsman, it would give him a reason to fight against Kingpin, and Daredevil could enlist him immediately. Besides Jessica Jones, Swordsman is the only vigilante currently expected to join Daredevil’s team, making him a key potential recruit.

Giving the Swordsman character a more prominent part in Born Again works well with the show’s mature rating. Because he fights with a sword, his battles are naturally quite violent. The TV-MA rating allows for more realistic and graphic fight scenes – including potentially lethal ones – which wouldn’t be possible in most other Marvel shows.

It would be compelling to see a wealthy New Yorker join Daredevil’s team. Throughout his career, Daredevil has primarily battled figures like Wilson Fisk – members of the city’s elite. This creates an interesting tension within the group, even considering Swordsman’s past as a vigilante.

The Swordsman Has A Bright Future As A Street-Level Antihero

The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t really explored many antiheroes, making Swordsman a great choice to fill that role after season two of Daredevil: Born Again. Deadpool is well-known as an antihero, but the Deadpool & Wolverine movie has shifted his focus to larger, multiversal adventures. He began as a more grounded, street-level mutant in the earlier FOX films, but that’s no longer his primary identity.

The Thunderbolts have largely become heroes now, acting more like traditional Avengers. While the Punisher remains an antihero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he lacks the typical superhero flair. Swordsman, though, fits the antihero mold perfectly. He’s a somewhat silly character, but easily adapts to playing either a villain or a hero depending on what the story needs.

Tony Dalton gained significant recognition from his role in Better Call Saul, which opens up possibilities for a larger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than initially anticipated. He’s a naturally charming actor who excels at portraying characters with a darker side, and he’s now well-known enough to lead his own story. The MCU has a history of elevating lesser-known characters, and they could easily do the same with Dalton’s Swordsman, turning him into a prominent Marvel hero.

Marvel’s future plans hinge on how well Daredevil: Born Again season 2 performs. If the show successfully expands Daredevil’s role, Marvel is likely to include him in more gritty, street-level stories. However, if the season doesn’t resonate with audiences, or if fans are more interested in seeing characters return from the old Netflix shows, the character of Swordsman—and actor Tony Dalton’s involvement in the MCU—could be over. So, anyone interested in Swordsman or Tony Dalton should pay close attention to how Born Again season 2 is received.
