Black Myth: Zhong Kui Studio Shows Off In-Engine Visuals With Chinese New Years Video

Game developer Science has released a new video for their upcoming game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Instead of showing off gameplay or the story, the six-minute video features a fully in-game cooking demonstration. It’s a celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Horse, which begins on February 17th. You can watch the video below.

Although the video features unusual creatures assisting the main character with cooking, the studio has clarified that it isn’t part of the official story for Black Myth: Zhong Kui. It’s simply a fun video created to show off the game’s graphics and artistic style.

The action RPG Black Myth: Zhong Kui was first revealed in August 2025 with a short teaser trailer. Unlike previous games in the series, the legendary Monkey King won’t be the main character. Instead, the game will focus on Zhong Kui, a powerful figure from Chinese folklore, who was shown riding a tiger in the trailer.

Game Science’s CEO, Feng Ji, has expressed a desire to begin a completely new game instead of creating downloadable content for Black Myth: Wukong. He shared that the team felt uncertain, discouraged, and anxious when they initially considered making DLC for Wukong.

During that time, I mostly felt confused, empty, and anxious—maybe even overly dramatic, but that’s how it felt. I couldn’t help feeling this way, even though I was frustrated with myself for not being happier. These feelings came over me in waves, especially when people started asking about a potential expansion—whether I was working on one, who would be included, and when it might come out.

As a professional, I’m used to masking my frustrations and pushing through to finish the downloadable content. I kept reminding myself that the people requesting this DLC were dedicated fans of Black Myth: Wukong and Game Science – the same people who helped us succeed and reach this point.

Ji explained how relieved he felt when Yang Qi, a co-founder of Game Science, told him the studio was starting work on a new game. This gives them the opportunity to build something completely original, including fresh graphics, gameplay, technology, and a new storyline.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is in development for PC and consoles, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet. While you wait, you can play the studio’s earlier game, Black Myth: Wukong, which is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can find our full review for more information. There’s also speculation that the game could eventually be released on the Nintendo Switch 2.
