“Bette Davis Eyes” Singer Kim Carnes Shares True Thoughts on JoJo Siwa

Kim Carnes isn’t impressed with JoJo Siwa‘s latest musical endeavor.

Kim Carnes, the initial performer of “Bette Davis Eyes,” openly expressed her thoughts about Abby Lee Miller’s cover version of her 1981 chart-topper on “Dance Moms” – and it seems she didn’t find it particularly impressive.

In her statement to TMZ on July 14th, Kim said, “When I compared my original rendition of ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ with a new version, it immediately seemed familiar – the phrasing, the tone, and even the subtle nuances were strikingly similar.

However, this doesn’t imply that the 79-year-old intends to contribute to any negative sentiments towards JoJo. In fact, as Kim stated, she strongly advocates for “women artists encouraging and uplifting one another.

In simpler terms, she expressed her firm disapproval against the hostile and derogatory remarks she’s witnessed on the internet, whether they were aimed at her, JoJo Siwa, or others. She believes such conduct has no place in the music industry or any other setting.

As a lifestyle expert, I firmly believe that welcoming constructive criticism is crucial for artistic growth – it’s one of the key elements in my own creative journey. That’s why I decided to openly express my genuine reactions, knowing full well that they would help me improve and grow as an artist.

She stated that artists should be free to express their feelings candidly, particularly when it comes to something as intimate as their voice. In today’s world, she noted, our voice is one of the few things we can genuinely call our own. Therefore, when it seems like someone else is using your voice, it touches a very personal nerve.

It was no secret to fans that Kim might not have been entirely enamored with JoJo’s rendition of “Bette Davis Eyes,” which she debuted at her concert this year, as she substituted her boyfriend’s name in the lyrics and sang “Chris Hughes‘ eyes” instead.

Following JoJo’s playful sharing of her studio cover on TikTok on July 7th, Kim posted a mysterious message that led many to speculate it was directed towards the 22-year-old.

In simpler terms, Kim expressed that there’s a gap between merely singing a song and truly embodying it. This was stated in a TikTok post on July 9, which has since been removed, accompanied by a video of her “Bette Davis Eyes” performance. Kim believes that genuine expression is what gives music an enduring quality.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but ponder over the silence from JoJo regarding Kim’s remarks about her remake of “Bette Davis Eyes.” Yet, in the past, JoJo had shared some light on the reasons behind her decision to record this classic.

Following her performance of the song live and noticing the heartwarming reaction from the audience, JoJo chose to head into the recording studio to capture a studio-quality vocal track on TikTok, July 7.
