When you imagine Pixar Animation Studios, there’s one image that likely comes instantly to mind: the distinctive lamp in its logo. For many of us, we might even hear the sound of that lamp – known as Luxo Jr. – bouncing on the “I” in Pixar’s opening animation sequence. As a beloved symbol of a company that has produced some of the most cherished and impactful animated films ever made, it was only fitting for Luxo Jr. to serve as the mascot for a LEGO set designed to commemorate the incredible storytelling achievements of Pixar over the past 30 years.
The recently launched LEGO Pixar Luxo Jr. collection, currently on sale for $69.99, isn’t merely a tribute to Pixar’s 30th anniversary; it’s a heartfelt expression of affection for all the movies produced by this renowned studio. The compact yet powerful set offers an engaging and detailed build experience, filled with Pixar-themed surprises or “Easter eggs” that delight fans throughout the construction process.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, let me share my excitement about this collection! It comprises 617 pieces divided across four bags, and fear not, it won’t disappoint even the most ardent fans. The adventure begins with assembling the nearly legendary Luxo Ball – remember that blue and yellow ball with the red star that Buzz Lightyear hops on in the original Toy Story? This iconic sphere makes a comeback for further appearances within Pixar’s impressive catalog.
While putting together this three-dimensional ball, you’ll notice an intriguing touch – random colors appearing in the inner layers. It’s reminiscent of how some LEGO display helmet sets feature pink blocks at the core to depict a brain, adding a unique and unexpected twist to the build.
It’s not hard to notice that these colors correspond to popular character pairs from Pixar films. Here’s a look at a square setup, which forms the internal structure of the ball. On the left side, it shows a pair of characters with colors that clearly depict Buzz and Woody from Toy Story. On the right, each side of the square showcases its own character duo. Alongside Toy Story’s heroes, you can find Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc., Linguini and Anton Ego from Ratatouille, and Carl and Russell from Up.
The way they use color palettes that remind us of Pixar’s well-known movies and characters is also seen in Luxo Jr., even though the references aren’t as obvious as those hidden inside the ball. However, there are definite hints to films like Inside Out, Cars, Coco, and many more beloved Pixar titles.
Upon finishing the Luxo Ball assembly, you’ll notice it’s highly adaptable for placement alongside Luxo Jr. Removing the ball’s panels effortlessly reveals the components necessary to connect the lamp and ball. You can arrange Luxo Jr. to be positioned above the ball, with each piece standing independently. Alternatively, you could remove a few panels from the ball so that Luxo can stand directly on it, mimicking the bouncing scene reminiscent of the Pixar opening.
The Luxo Jr. lamp boasts an impressive level of detail and offers numerous angles for adjustment, giving you multiple options to customize its look. Remarkably, when you rotate the lampshade, it appears to mimic movements from the animation. It might seem unusual, but as soon as all the bricks are in place, this set seems to develop a personality of its own.
In the Luxo Jr. LEGO collection, the most prized item is a secret component tucked away within the lamp’s light bulb. Our designers have cleverly kept the most intriguing Easter egg until the end.
Tucked within the glass casing of the light bulb, you’ll find a miniature replica of the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story. Although it lacks the logos and is composed of only a few small parts, its iconic yellow and red color scheme immediately identifies it as this famous vehicle.
As a devoted admirer of Pixar’s cinematic magic, I find this LEGO set to be an heartfelt homage to their timeless tales. For any ardent Pixar enthusiast, this might just be as essential as a popcorn bucket at the movies. While LEGO sets aren’t exactly necessities, they certainly add a touch of whimsy and nostalgia that can’t be measured.
Priced at $70, I must admit, I was expecting a slightly higher tag given its charm. However, this set promises hours of delightful assembly and countless memories stirred from Pixar’s rich filmography. It’s undeniably one of the finest options for adults under $100, and it proudly takes its place on my shelf as a testament to my love for Pixar.
