KRAFTON and KRAFTON Montreal Studio have revealed Project Windless, a single-player, open-world action RPG based on the Korean fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears. Development began in 2022, and the game is planned for release on consoles, including PlayStation 5, and PC. A specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Here is an overview of the game, via KRAFTON:
A New Premium Open-World Action RPG
Project Windless is an open-world game where your choices matter. Set on a vast continent torn by conflict, it blends a compelling story with challenging, skill-based combat and large-scale battles. Created using Unreal Engine 5, the game lets you explore a non-linear world where your actions, combat encounters, and interactions with different groups directly influence the story and shape the outcome of the war.
Set in the World of The Bird That Drinks Tears
Project Windless is built to be enjoyed by everyone, even those new to this fantasy world, but it’s deeply connected to Lee Yeong-do’s famous Korean novels, The Bird That Drinks Tears. Instead of retelling the story directly, the game takes place 1,500 years before the novels, during a time of myths and legends. This makes Project Windless accessible to new players and offers a fresh experience for fans of the books. The game world is home to four distinct intelligent races – Humans, Rekon, Nhaga, and Tokkebi – each with their own unique cultures, struggles, and perspectives.

Play as the Hero King
In Project Windless, you play as the Hero King, a powerful warrior from the Rekon race. Rekons are large, bird-like humanoids famous for their incredible strength and fighting ability. Wielding two magically-created blades, the Hero King is a formidable fighter who can take on many enemies at once, battle huge monsters, and command armies in large-scale conflicts. By gaining a reputation and building connections, you’ll unite different races and groups, and your choices will determine the fate of a new kingdom.
Large-Scale Battles Powered by Mass Technology
Project Windless is powered by Mass Technology, which allows for incredibly large-scale battles with thousands of soldiers and huge creatures fighting in real time on ever-changing battlefields.
Battles happen in real-time and require quick reflexes and skillful play. Instead of giving orders from afar, players are right in the thick of huge fights, using both their combat abilities and smart tactics to change the course of battle. This creates a unique experience where you’re fighting one-on-many, combining intense personal action with the feeling of being part of a large-scale war.
“From the start, we asked ourselves what it really means to play a legendary figure in a fantasy world,” said KRAFTON Montreal Studio head and creative director Patrik Methe. “For us, that meant giving players real agency, not just in combat, but in how wars unfold, how alliances are formed, and how history is written. Project Windless is built around the idea that legend is not something you observe, it is something you actively create through play.”
A Global Development Effort
I’m really excited about Project Windless! It’s being made by KRAFTON Montreal, which is KRAFTON’s main studio here in North America. They’re working closely with the team back in South Korea, and it sounds like they’re combining top-notch Western game development skills with a deep dive into Korean mythology and culture to make something really special. They’re clearly aiming for a world that feels authentic and well-built, and that’s awesome!
