CM Punk is well-known for crafting memorable moments in the WWE, yet he also frequently amuses audiences on television. His most recent acting gig is in SYFY’s gripping series titled Revival, a spin-off from the comic books written by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. In tonight’s fresh episode, Bloodlines, viewers will witness a darker, more villainous aspect of Punk, quite distinct from his character in WWE. ComicBook got to chat with Punk about his part in the series, discussing the timeline of its development, his affection for the comics, and channeling his inner Heel Punk persona.
The TV series “Revival” initially originated as a comic book series published by Image Comics. Throughout its run, the show has drawn heavily on the storyline and numerous elements from the original graphic novels. Interestingly, the creator of the show, Punk, was already a devoted reader of these comics prior to the TV adaptation’s inception. Remarkably, Seeley, the author of the comics, endorsed Punk’s work following his previous film project in 2019.
As a devoted cinephile, I must confess that I was already well-acquainted with the comic series before joining this show. In fact, I’m quite the aficionado, having had the privilege to meet Tim Seeley on the set of a film titled Girl on the Third Floor a couple of years back. This connection has been part of my journey in bringing this project to life for some time now.
Punk expressed that in the industry, projects often take a considerable amount of time to start, and there’s a lot of uncertainty about whether they’re good or faithful to the original source material. He was fortunate enough to be involved with Revival from its early stages, thanks to Challengers Comics in Chicago, Illinois, who always guide him towards quality releases. Excited at the prospect back then, Punk was approached by Tim and Aaron B. Koontz, and they discussed his potential involvement in the project. Now, years later, their vision has become a reality.
In the show, Punk portrays Anthony Check, and it’s no exaggeration to say that he isn’t shy about taking aggressive actions to advance the Check family. He often finds himself at odds with Dana and Martha (Em), but much like certain controversial periods in Punk’s wrestling career, there’s a sense that he might be misjudged.
Punk suggested that the nature of goodness or evil in the story might depend on one’s point of view. He questioned whether the Check brothers were truly villains, and hinted at a possible parallel with the Cypresses. He expressed uncertainty about this, suggesting it could be influenced by where someone stands in terms of their perspective. Additionally, Punk found the character he played and the world in which it was set to be enjoyable, as he felt comfortable portraying an older brother leading a questionable family group in a rural, snowy Wisconsin setting.
Tonight, don’t miss out on what unfolds further! Tune in to SYFY at 9 PM (Central Standard Time), or catch it later on Peacock once it’s been aired. In the heart of rural Wisconsin one extraordinary day, something astonishing happened – people who had recently passed away rose from their graves. Yet, this isn’t your typical zombie tale; the “resurrected” carry on as they once did, maintaining their original personalities. When I, Officer Dana Cypress, found myself unwittingly thrust into the eye of a gruesome murder mystery, I was left grappling with the pandemonium in a town gripped by fear and bewilderment, where every living soul – be they alive or undead – became a potential suspect.
