A VFX artist who contributed to James Gunn’s Superman movie recently shared information about a peculiar and humorously grim scene that didn’t make it into the final edit. On his social media account, Matthew Eberle explained an alternate opening sequence where Krypto the Superdog encountered a heap of slain abominable snowmen. This disclosure now provides an explanation for the enigma surrounding the promotional merchandise, which featured Yeti-themed items like a “Fortress of Solitude Battle Set” toy, despite the creature being missing from the final version of the film. As told by Eberle, the scene showed Krypto pulling a weakened Superman through snowdrifts, where they would have passed numerous dead snowmen remains.
In the beginning, as Krypto was pulling Superman along, they encountered numerous deceased monstrous snow creatures resembling abominable snowmen… Superman expressed to Krypto, “You need to stop killing those abominable snowmen,” to which Eberle added in a post, complete with a production backstage photo, “That scene didn’t make it through the editing process. I was there.
In a scenario following Superman’s loss to the Hammer of Boravia in the initial scene, this event emphasizes the hero’s vulnerability within the new DC Universe. James Gunn’s unique humor, as seen in his previous works, is reflected in the idea that Krypto possesses a lethal affinity for Yetis. However, incorporating this element could have disrupted the seriousness of the sequence. The cinematic version of Superman utilizes this opening to set the high-stakes tone for the character’s battles. A grim joke, especially one like that involving the Yeti, might have caused a significant tonal shift, distracting from the intended emotional weight of Superman’s first substantial defeat. The final cut of the opening sequence effectively establishes Superman’s character and world, and the Yeti joke could have been too unusual and shocking for this crucial initial impression.
Superman Is Already a Success for DC Studios
Dawn of Justice (28%) were highly contentious, but Superman has garnered a unified critical consensus that endorses the new creative path under Gunn and Peter Safran.
The impressive success of the movie “Superman” is clearly evident at the box office. In its first week alone, it earned $125 million domestically and surpassed $250 million globally. Despite a reported production budget of $225 million and marketing costs pushing the total investment to approximately $350 million, the movie seems poised for profitability. A significant factor in its financial success will be maintaining a strong audience interest in its second weekend, with predictions showing only a 50% to 55% drop, an encouraging sign of positive word-of-mouth. This would be a key achievement, as it would help the film avoid the steep box office declines that affected other recent superhero movies and demonstrate that “Superman” has lasting appeal. Although international markets and future competition pose challenges, the movie’s quality provides the DCU with the strong start it was desperately seeking.
Superman is now playing in theaters.
