The tune “Peace of Mind” resonates with a situation likely recognized by those brushing up against fame – the instant when your life accelerates and seems to slip away from personal control. The lyrics query, “Where do you discover/Your tranquil state of mind/Is it in the destinations you visit/Or the people you encounter?” This is where the song initiates.
As a movie critic, I find myself in awe of Samara Joy‘s meteoric rise to fame. At just 25 years old, this remarkable jazz singer from The Bronx, New York, has skyrocketed to the pinnacle of her craft at an astonishing pace. Her career, already shining brightly, promises to reach even greater heights as she takes center stage at the BBC Proms on Saturday. Titled “The Great American Songbook and Beyond,” this performance is sure to captivate audiences live on Radio 3, just like every other Proms event.
Samara shares with TopMob, after recently arriving in London for her upcoming Royal Albert Hall performance, that the lyrics she sings originate from her own life experiences. She describes a sense of being swept away by success, a sensation similar to growing up quickly and finding it all happening rather too swiftly.
In a blink of an eye, Samara found herself with three chart-topping studio albums, numerous critical accolades, five Grammy Awards, and bookings at the world’s most elite venues – life had swiftly taken her to new heights.
To witness her perform and listen to her speak is like being with someone who embodies authenticity, grace, and remarkable self-assurance. These qualities, she explains, were instilled in her by a nurturing environment filled with love, family, and community, where music and singing were ever-present.
Samara McLendon, also known as Samara Joy, is a Philadelphia native who hails from a family deeply rooted in gospel music. Her grandfather established a renowned gospel choir there, and her father pursued singing professionally. Music has always been an integral part of her life, with countless hours spent harmonizing with her dad during car rides to school, holiday gatherings, and casual moments at home. To put it simply, music was not just a passion for Samara; it was the only career she ever envisioned for herself!
She primarily sang Motown, soul, and RnB tunes growing up, but it wasn’t until she attended college at 17 that she encountered jazz. Formal lessons were a novelty for her then, as she had been self-teaching herself by ear all along. To put it another way, she didn’t consciously realize she was practicing, but in truth, it was a constant and unconscious learning process.
Could she possibly have chosen the path of popular music? “Perhaps, but that field seems quite crowded. It appears to be oversaturated. Furthermore, pop music often demands a significant portion of one’s personal identity to conform to a specific image that fans can connect with.
I find my path straightforward and authentic, as it suits me best. The other paths seem congested with too many obstacles! I consider myself fortunate as I have the freedom to pursue my true passions without having to compromise much, unlike many artists of my generation.

As a film critic, I’d put it this way: “While some may draw comparisons to icons like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, allow me to clarify. I aspire for listeners to discern that my performance is not an attempt at mimicry or mechanical recreation, but a unique expression birthed from its own time and environment. Since I didn’t live in their era, you won’t find an exact replica of their sound in me.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Samara adds a unique touch to classic works, showcasing a voice that’s technically impressive, breathtakingly beautiful, and filled with emotion – an experience the sold-out crowd at Albert Hall will soon be privy to.
In her words, The Great American Songbook refers to timeless tunes such as Stardust and Misty, while “Beyond” encompasses the works of artists like Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, and others who expanded upon that tradition.
What was Samara’s sentiment towards the Proms when she received the invitation last autumn? She expressed that even though she had watched numerous performance videos before, it wasn’t until recently that she truly grasped the significance and scale of the event.
London isn’t unfamiliar to her; she has previously played at the Barbican and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. However, performing at the Proms is an entirely different ballgame. This entails activities like going for dress fittings, sorting through multiple options (up to 30) to finally select the two outfits she will wear on stage, which Samara seems a bit indifferent about.
I’m not exactly a trendsetter when it comes to style, but given the chance to dress formally, I make an effort to participate! Comfort is really my priority, which is one of the reasons I don’t consider myself a public figure. More often than not, I let someone else handle the fashion choices.
Off-stage, I’m not an overly larger-than-life character. Once I return home, I strive to get back to my regular, everyday life as quickly as possible – doing things like grocery shopping or signing up for fitness classes. I enjoy socializing, but only up to a certain extent, and then I prefer to withdraw.
The point at which, maybe to put it another way, peace of mind comes calling.
