The long-awaited release date for HBO and HBO Max’s new “Harry Potter” series has been confirmed, fueling even more anticipation among fans. With a potential run of up to 10 seasons, this show could potentially delve deeper than the movies ever did. Given the length of the books and the rich tapestry of the “Potter” universe’s history, this series might finally provide the comprehensive exploration that “Harry Potter” fans have yearned for since “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” concluded the film adaptations.
Television’s format allows for a more detailed exploration of the Harry Potter series, as it provides ample opportunity to delve deeper into characters, storylines, and lore that were briefly touched upon or overlooked in the films. Since there’s only so much content that can be crammed into a 2-hour movie, a season of television offers more room for expansion. As the first season is expected to cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the initial installment of the series, it provides the writers and producers with an excellent opportunity to emphasize characters that were underrepresented in the films. Here are seven characters I eagerly anticipate seeing on screen during the first season of Harry Potter.
7) Charlie Weasley
Unfortunately for Charlie Weasley, despite all his siblings making appearances in the Harry Potter films at some point, he himself never featured on screen beyond being part of a group photo during their Egypt trip in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. As the second eldest Weasley child, Charlie graduated from Hogwarts slightly ahead of Harry Potter’s arrival, and he has a deep affection for dragons. Thankfully, since he is a well-established character in the books, there’s a chance that HBO could incorporate him into their new fantasy series, particularly as an opportunity to include more dragon scenes within their franchise.
6) Argus Filch and Arabella Figg
As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the casting of Argus Filch, the grumpy caretaker of Hogwarts, who will be portrayed by the talented Paul Whitehouse. However, his counterpart, Arabella Figg, another ‘squib’, hasn’t been cast yet. Both Filch and Arabella belong to a lesser-known segment of the Wizarding World – the squibs: non-magical individuals born to magical parents. The intriguing concept of squibs was only hinted at in the films, and it seems like an exciting prospect to explore this overlooked group further. After all, Arabella was a part of the Order of the Phoenix, and Filch, despite his gruff exterior, showed a softer side by the series’ end.
5) Peeves
Delight, Harry Potter poltergeist and ghost enthusiasts: Prepare for the return of Peeves in the upcoming series! Although he was entirely omitted from the movies following Rik Mayall’s casting and filmed scenes, this mischievous spirit will indeed make an appearance on the show. As of now, we’re still unaware who will bring him to life, but it’s reassuring to know that a vital component of Hogwarts will be part of the storyline. Peeves provides much-needed humor in otherwise grim situations and offers a contrast to other ghosts who mainly whine.
4) The Longbottoms
In the films, Neville’s parents make a brief appearance, while his grandmother Augusta, who raised him, does not. It’s possible that all of the Longbottom family could appear in the upcoming series eventually, but focusing on them during the first season would be ideal. Unlike the movies and books, which primarily follow Harry’s point of view, the TV show might choose to explore different angles and provide a more comprehensive look at the Wizarding World when the story begins. This perspective shift could shed light on Neville’s tragic family history, his upbringing by his grandmother, and perhaps delve deeper into Neville himself as a character. Of course, we want both Neville and his backstory to be significant parts of the series.
3) Lee Jordan
Lee Jordan was a close friend of Fred and George Weasley, as well as the announcer for Quidditch matches at Hogwarts school. He made appearances in the initial two films, but his character wasn’t seen after that, even though he still played an important role in the books. In the final book, Lee collaborated with other allies of Harry Potter to run a type of pirate radio station. Additionally, he was present during the Battle of Hogwarts. The exciting Quidditch scenes from the early films were a highlight, so it’s hoped that the upcoming TV series will preserve those sequences and include more significant roles for Lee throughout the first season.
2) Professor Binns
In the movies, Professor Cuthbert Binns, much like the mischievous Peeves, was completely omitted. It’s possible that the filmmakers deemed the concept of a Hogwarts teacher who continued teaching even after death as too grim for young audiences. Alternatively, they may have felt his character lacked significance in the grand scheme of things. Initially, Binns’ notable scenes from the early books were assigned to McGonagall or Flitwick; however, both characters are superb, and the notion of a spectral faculty member is too intriguing to ignore! Although Professor Binns has yet to be cast, incorporating him into the series could provide insight into the afterlife in the Wizarding World, particularly during the first season.
1) Hannah Abbott
In the world of Harry Potter, Hannah Abbott is the first student in her year whom the Sorting Hat sorts into Hufflepuff due to alphabetical order. Throughout all the books, she makes appearances or gets mentioned, even though she doesn’t play a significant role in the movies. However, considering her minor but recurring role, it would be great to see more of Hannah starting from the first season of the upcoming show. Interestingly, she ends up with Neville Longbottom, who was almost the Boy-Who-Lived. Though the writers might change some character endings in the series, Hannah is a consistent Hufflepuff presence that’s not Cedric Diggory.
