Pokemon Pokopia Will Let You Play With Your Friends (& It Tops Animal Crossing Already)

A big part of why Animal Crossing: New Horizons became so popular in 2020 was the ability to visit friends’ islands online. It’s still a favorite for relaxed virtual get-togethers for many players. While there hasn’t always been a ton to do together, the 3.0 update improved things. However, after trying the multiplayer in Pokemon Pokopia, I think this new game has the potential to offer a better cooperative experience than New Horizons in several important areas.

Pokemon Pokopia will let you play either by yourself or with friends. I recently had a chance to try both ways, and even though I usually prefer playing alone, I was really surprised by how fun the multiplayer mode is. If you enjoy playing cozy games with others, Pokemon Pokopia is definitely worth checking out.

Pokemon Pokopia‘s Multiplayer Creates a Space with Shared Goals

When my best friend visited my island in New Horizons for the first time, I was a little disappointed. While it was great to explore together, the game didn’t offer much in terms of shared activities. She could leave a message and take some fruit home, but I hoped we’d have more things to do together. The 3.0 update’s dream islands addressed this, and it seems Pokemon Pokopia has taken that concept and improved upon it.

Playing co-op in Pokopia takes you to a brand-new island built specifically for multiplayer. It’s a separate area from your single-player base, but the gameplay feels familiar. In this co-op mode, you and your friends work together towards unique goals, like finding specific Pokémon and fixing up the local Pokémon Center. Despite feeling a bit anxious about playing with people I didn’t know at the event, I was really impressed with how Pokopia handled multiplayer.

This new game mode offers a dedicated space for players to collaborate and achieve shared goals. It’s more than just visiting friends; it provides a separate island where you can build and progress together. This focused multiplayer experience is a great addition, and I’m excited to explore it further. However, it doesn’t quite replicate the feeling of visiting a friend’s town in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Multiplayer Could Have One Unfortunate Limitation in Pokopia

I’m not very good at designing islands in New Horizons or any game, so I prefer to keep my gameplay private. However, a big part of the fun in games like Animal Crossing is sharing your creations with friends. This brings up a potential issue with Pokopia. From what I understand, Pokopia might not allow players to visit each other’s main islands. While the dedicated multiplayer area is great, some players will likely want to see what their friends have built on their personal islands too.

You can also create something special with the multiplayer islands. When you play a co-op game in Pokopia, the island you build together is saved on the host’s game, making it a fun, collaborative space to share with friends. However, if you enjoy spending a lot of time designing your own personal island, it would be disappointing if you couldn’t invite others to visit and see your creation.

Even though there’s a small potential issue, I’m confident the multiplayer in Pokopia will be great. I really like the concept of players sharing a world and working together towards common goals, and it seems well-executed. When it comes to cooperative gameplay, Pokemon Pokopia could even be better than Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, I expect many players will enjoy both games anyway.
