As a fan, it’s been quite a challenging time for Marvel Studios lately, with critics voicing their concerns in recent years. The release of “Eternals” marked the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to receive a “Rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes, which seems to have sparked a wave of negativity. Some of this criticism can be linked to the superhero fatigue that set in after an overwhelming number of Marvel projects were released post-“Avengers: Endgame”. However, it’s hard not to notice a decline in the quality of MCU productions. Although “Thunderbolts” had shown promise, the latest Disney+ project, “Ironheart”, isn’t living up to expectations just yet.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel that my journey with Ironheart has been a steep climb. Coming hot on the heels of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and introducing a character we met in that film, it’s been nearly three years since we first heard about this series gracing Disney’s streaming platform. Marvel Studios has done an impressive job whipping up excitement, even roping in Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., who seems eager to hand over the mantle.
Unfortunately, the approval of the MCU’s poster boy doesn’t seem to be enough to silence the naysayers. Before Ironheart even debuted, it was review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes, a premature and unjust verdict from an unpleasant group of critics.
The current Tomatometer rating for the show exceeds its initial viewer score, standing at 72% fresh based on 39 reviews. Rotten Tomatoes has also been working to eliminate unnecessary negative feedback, as Ironheart currently holds a 71% fresh audience score at the time of this writing. These figures are quite impressive, but considering the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history, they likely don’t meet the expectations set by Kevin Feige and his team.
Among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series, Ironheart’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes is one of the four lowest, with Marvel’s Inhumans, Echo, and Secret Invasion being ranked lower. It’s worth noting that the Netflix shows are a unique case. While we can discuss Marvel’s Inhumans less favorably, Echo and Secret Invasion are somewhat comparable in terms of criticism. Both shows suffered from weak storylines that failed to fully utilize their intriguing characters. The criticisms towards Ironheart echo these issues, but there’s still time for the series to address and rectify its problems.
Ironheart‘s Unique Release Schedule Could Be Its Saving Grace
Although critics’ judgments are already solidified as they’ve watched all six episodes of Ironheart, viewers find themselves in a different position. Only the first three installments of the series are currently accessible on Disney+, with the remaining three premiering on July 1st. Marvel Studios tends to keep their plans under wraps for shows on Disney+, which means things could escalate dramatically next week. There are whispers suggesting that Mephisto might play a significant role in Ironheart, and if these rumors prove true, his live-action debut would be quite an achievement given the anticipation surrounding him since WandaVision.
As a movie buff, I can’t wait to see where Riri Williams’ tale unfolds in “Ironheart.” She’s determined to carry on Tony Stark’s legacy by any means necessary, which often leads her into murky waters and hidden corners. Her choices may well come back to haunt her, and it’ll take every ounce of her intellect to devise a solution that doesn’t involve losing something precious. The anticipation is killing me!
