Given that James Bond stories often culminate in large-scale action sequences, it’s not surprising that the upcoming 007: First Light game will emphasize action over the stealth gameplay IO Interactive is known for with the Hitman series. In a recent interview with GameInformer, gameplay director Andreas Krogh explained that while the game will be more action-packed, it will still incorporate some of the social stealth elements that made Agent 47’s games popular.
According to Krogh, 007: First Light focuses on fast-paced action, unlike the more deliberate, stealth-focused gameplay of Hitman. The developers aim to keep the Bond game moving quickly by giving players plenty of options, so they can make decisions much faster than in a typical Hitman level.
With Hitman, we approached stealth as a way to create interesting puzzles. We’re bringing that same stealth gameplay to the new Bond game. However, a key difference is that in Bond, we want the action to always be moving forward, whether you’re fighting or sneaking around.
In Hitman, we often designed levels that encouraged players to spend time observing and carefully testing the environment. With the new Bond game, while observation is still possible, the immediate options are much clearer, allowing players to quickly try things out and progress. Our goal is to streamline decision-making, keeping the action moving at a faster pace.
IO Interactive has openly shared that their experience making the Hitman games is informing the development of 007: First Light. However, they also emphasize that the new Bond game will be distinct. Martin Emborg, the cinematics and narrative director, explained that 007: First Light will prioritize storytelling more than typical Hitman games. He drew a comparison to Hitman: Absolution from 2012, which balanced action and stealth with a strong narrative and frequent cutscenes.
According to Emborg, this design choice stems from the fact that James Bond stories are typically driven by a strong narrative and a sense of urgency. Giving players complete freedom, like in the World of Assassination style, wouldn’t fit the story-focused nature of an action-adventure game like 007 First Light. While stealth and infiltration are key parts of the game, it needs the same level of narrative direction as Absolution.
The new James Bond game, 007: First Light, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 starting May 27th. A recent trailer highlighted the game’s story and Bond’s character. PC gamers will be pleased to know the game now requires less RAM.
