Valve has announced potential problems with Steam Deck availability. Following a delay for the Steam Machine due to memory shortages and rising RAM costs, the company now says the OLED Steam Deck may experience stock issues in certain areas. Valve has also stopped making the 256 GB LCD version of the Steam Deck. While it’s still for sale, it won’t be restocked once current supplies are gone.
Valve announced on the Steam store page that the Steam Deck OLED is experiencing occasional stock issues in certain areas because of limited memory and storage. They also stated that the older Steam Deck LCD model with 256GB of storage has been discontinued and won’t be restocked once current supplies run out.
Earlier this month, the company mentioned that a shortage of memory was impacting its hardware. They explained that this shortage forced them to adjust their shipping dates and prices, though they didn’t share specifics about their plans. Valve still intends to launch the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and new Steam Controller in the first six months of 2026, but hasn’t announced a firm release date.
Valve confirmed they still plan to release all three products in the first half of the year. They’re currently working on setting firm prices and launch dates, and want to be sure before making an announcement, as these things can shift. They promise to share updates as soon as everything is finalized.
The current shortage of memory could cause problems for the Steam Deck in the near future, and potentially slow down Valve’s work on any future handheld devices. However, Valve has stated they aren’t currently working on a Steam Deck 2.
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais recently discussed the Steam Deck and its impact on the original Steam Machine. He explained that currently, there aren’t any off-the-shelf components available that would meet Valve’s requirements for a future version of the Steam Deck.
We’re not aiming for just a small performance boost – like 20, 30, or even 50% faster – while maintaining the same battery life. We want a significant leap in performance. So, we’ve been focusing on advancements in the hardware and design, and we have a clear vision for the next Steam Deck. However, currently there aren’t any processors available that would deliver the level of performance we need for a truly next-generation device.
So, I’ve been hearing some chatter lately that Sony might delay the PS6 until 2028 or even 2029. Apparently, the cost of RAM is going up, and that’s what’s causing the potential pushback. It’s a bit disappointing if true, but understandable given the circumstances!
