For five years now, there’s been increasing chatter about the potential hardware for the next generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. As per Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube, it’s speculated that the AMD Zen 6 chip will drive both the PS6 and the next Xbox, codenamed Magnus. This chip is said to have 11 CPU cores in total, with 3 primary Zen 6 cores and 8 secondary Zen 6 C cores. In addition, it’s expected that graphics will be provided by a 264 mm squared graphics die.
As a gamer, I’m excited about the size of this SoC – it’s a neat 144 mm squared. What makes it even more impressive is the Bridge Die that connects to it, which leads us to the graphics die. This baby boasts a whopping 384-bit memory bus, making it the broadest in the gaming market right now. For context, the Xbox Series X settles for a 320-bit memory bus. So, what does this mean? Well, it means that data flow between the graphics die and the SOC will be smoother and wider, allowing for swifter processing and data transfer, ultimately enhancing my gaming experience.
Considering the assortment of hardware components that make up the Magnus chip, it’s important to note that the APU (combining GPU and SoC) contains a total of 80 compute units, which are distributed across both its graphics processing and central processing unit cores.
As per the interpretation of “Moore’s Law is Dead,” the original assumption about the chip was that it would cater to mid-range laptops, as proposed by Moore. However, recent findings suggest that this chip isn’t destined for mid-range laptops; instead, it appears to be tailored for a semi-custom order, which implies it was specifically designed for gaming consoles.
On social media platform X, hardware expert Kepler offered a different perspective on the speculation about Magnus being a chip for the PS6. Instead, he suggested that it could potentially be a chip for the next Xbox model. Kepler hinted at this by noting that PlayStation’s codenames for their chips are inspired by characters from Shakespeare’s works.
Recently, there’s been talk suggesting that DirectX 12 Work Graphs, an innovative feature in graphics processing and computing, may not be utilized initially by the upcoming next-generation consoles. Reportedly, this decision is due to a transitional phase where developers will likely create games for both current and future systems, known as a cross-generational period, according to Kepler.
Previously, we’ve encountered instances where games were released across multiple generations, such as the case of God of War Ragnarok. Although it was initially designed for the PS5, it was also made available on the PS4 as well.
Work Graphs currently doesn’t include procedural generation capabilities, a feature commonly employed for mass production of detailed assets in game development. As such, developers may not adopt it extensively during the next-generation phase, especially since their existing engines and tools do not support this type of graphics programming (procedural generation), particularly during the transition period.” – Kepler
The potentially leaked Magnus chip could be an early outcome of the collaboration between Microsoft and AMD, in which AMD agreed to manufacture chips for a variety of Microsoft’s gaming devices.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d venture to guess that’s the upcoming Xbox, considering AMD’s habit of naming PlayStation System-on-Chips after Shakespearean characters.
