Stygian Onslaught Overview
Stygian Onslaught is a new event and challenging endgame mode added with the 5.7 update. It features three powerful bosses with unique mechanics tied to Ley Lines. Players must defeat them within either two minutes (on Menacing, Fearless, or Dire difficulty) or ten minutes (on Normal, Advancing, or Hard difficulty).
A special event called “Disturbance Outbreak” is happening soon! During this event, you can earn extra rewards by defeating bosses on Hard difficulty or higher. You’ll get an additional reward for every 120 Resin you spend, making it a great time to farm for artifacts!
The enemy levels for each difficulty level are as follows
- Normal: 40
- Advancing: 70
- Hard: 90
- Menacing: 100
- Fearless: 105
- Dire: 110
Keep in mind that a higher difficulty setting doesn’t always mean everything is twice as hard. For example, a boss on the ‘Dire’ difficulty might have about twice the health of that same boss on ‘Fearless,’ but other factors can also change.
Because the Hard difficulty has a 10-minute time limit and bosses at all difficulties below Menacing don’t have special effects, this guide’s boss strategy section will cover Menacing difficulty and above. Players won’t be able to use the same character to beat multiple bosses – for instance, if you use a powerful Arlecchino for the first boss, you’ll need to switch characters for the second. Also, characters starting Stygian Onslaught will have no energy, and Skirk and Mavuika will begin with zero stacks of their respective abilities, Serpent’s Subtlety and Fighting Spirit.
Rewards
Once you’ve beaten the three bosses within the time limit, you’ll receive rewards determined by how challenging the experience was. Importantly, earning a reward at a higher difficulty also automatically grants you all the rewards from lower difficulties.
Players can team up with friends to beat bosses on Menacing difficulty or easier and earn rewards for doing so.

During the Disturbance Outbreak, players who use 1200 Resin will receive a Dust of Enlightenment as a reward.
Radiant Phantasm
Radiant Phantasms are weapon skins that change how your weapons look in the game. These skins don’t last forever, though – they disappear at the end of each update. To get them back, players need to complete the new Stygian Onslaught challenge on Dire difficulty with each update.
Dust of Enlightenment
Dust of Enlightenment, sometimes called “feathers,” lets you change the bonus stats on artifacts that are already at +20. It’s a complex system, so for detailed information, please see the article dedicated to Dust of Enlightenment!
This Patch’s (Luna IV, 6.3) Bosses
The three selected bosses for Luna IV are the
- Lord of the Hidden Depths: Whisperer of Nightmares
- From now on, this boss will be referred to as the “dog” or “Lunar dog.”
- Battle-Hardened Fireblade Shock Trooper
- From now on, this boss will be referred to as the “shocktrooper.”
- Emporer of Fire and Iron
- From now on, this boss will be referred to as the “crab” or “pyro crab.”
Lord of the Hidden Depths: Whisperer of Nightmares

When playing on Menacing difficulty or higher, the lunar dog will jump back, become invisible, and then create a protective shield. You can tell how much health the shield has by looking at the small white arrows displayed on screen.

Players can break this shield – it lasts about 1 minute and 25 seconds – by attacking either the large lunar dog or the four smaller creatures (called “mini-dogs”). If the shield isn’t destroyed within that time, the attempt will fail.
This shield is much weaker to lunar damage – it takes three times the normal damage. If you’re playing a character that deals lunar damage (like Flins, Nefer, or Zibai), your priority should be breaking the shield on the boss. However, the shield has a significant amount of health – about 45% of the boss’s total – so it’s difficult to break quickly with characters who don’t use lunar damage, especially if you haven’t heavily invested in them.
You can break the shield by defeating the small dogs. Each dog has 25% of the shield’s health, so destroying all of them will lower the shield. However, each dog actually has a bit more health than 25%, so it’s best to use a character that can group and control the dogs to make them easier to defeat.
If you’re playing on Fearless or Dire difficulty, hitting enemies’ shields with lunar damage will give your characters a significant boost of energy.
When the dog’s shield breaks, it becomes vulnerable and takes significant damage, briefly falling before its defenses weaken. Once it recovers, the extra damage it was taking stops. Later in the fight, when its health gets low enough, it will put up another shield that players need to break before they can continue.

Columbina is a great Lunar DMG sub-dps and support, being able to greatly enhance the damage of any Lunar DPS. She can also play as an on-field Lunar DPS.3 |
![]() Ineffa |
Ineffa is a powerful Lunar-charged sub-dps with damage only slightly lower than Flins. |
Lauma |
Lauma is a Lunar bloom support that greatly increases the damage dealt by teams reliant on Lunar bloom.4 |

Battle-Hardened Fireblade Shock Trooper

When the battle starts, the shocktrooper will create a shield with three layers that you need to break one by one. While the shield is up, the shocktrooper is very resistant to all damage types except electro, and the shield will slowly regain health. However, hitting it with electro or lunar-charged attacks will briefly stop this healing. Essentially, consistently applying hydro and electro damage will prevent the shield from healing at all. Each time you break a layer of the shield, the shocktrooper takes a large amount of damage. After all three layers are down, the shocktrooper will be vulnerable and take significantly more electro damage.
Okay, so listen up – if I don’t break all three of his shields fast enough, he’ll hit me with this crazy powerful attack and it’s basically game over. Seriously, timing is everything here, or I’m toast!
Recommended Characters
![]() Ineffa |
Ineffa is a powerful lunar-charged sub-dps. She also brings off-field electro application to help stop the regeneration of the shocktrooper’s shield |
Columbina |
Columbina is a powerful hydro applicator, being able to apply hydro without her elemental burst. She also boosts lunar-charged damage if you bring either Ineffa or Flins. |
Flins |
Flins is a powerful lunar-charged dps whose team archetypes are perfectly matched to counter the boss |
Furina |
Furina is a powerful sub-dps and support. She brings valuable off-field hydro application and can greatly increase the DMG% of all party members.9 |
Varesa |
Varesa is a powerful electro dps who can be used if you do not have Ineffa or Flins. Other powerful electro dps (like Clorinde) will likely work with enough investment. |

Other Notes and Teams
The Shocktrooper’s shield will eventually recharge on its own, even without being constantly affected by Hydro or Electro attacks. However, you can still beat it with teams that don’t focus on those elements. Many players have had success using the following team compositions against the Shocktrooper.
Varesa/Iansan/Mavuika11/Chevreuse Since the shocktrooper’s electro RES does not increase, a powerful electro dps without electro-charged can still take it down. Furthermore, Chevreuse also provides 40% RES shred. |
Skirk/Furina/Citlali12/Escoffier Even though this team does not have electro, Escoffier provides 55% RES shred that practically brings the team back to neutral fighting ground. |
![]() Arlecchino/Yelan/Bennett/Ineffa Since electro-charged or lunar-charged will constantly be triggered, the boss will constantly be afflicted with a hydro and electro aura. Overvape teams with a pyro character using vaporize against this aura are also viable alternatives.13 |
Shocktroopers don’t automatically activate their shields, and they can be interrupted. If you’re a skilled player, here are some team suggestions:
Mavuika/Iansan/Ororon/Chevreuse By continuously triggering overload, the shocktrooper will become staggered, and you can ignore the shield phase. However, if he un-staggers himself, it will become nigh impossible to destroy the shield14 |
Geo Traveler/Jean/Zhongli/Flex Jean can stagger the boss initially before Geo Traveler and Zhongli place down their constructs. If the constructs are placed correctly, travelers can take advantage of the game’s environmental damage mechanic to quickly finish off the boss.15 |
Emporer of Fire and Iron

When the battle starts, the crab creates a fiery shield that significantly boosts its defenses against all damage types. On the hardest difficulty, this is the only unique thing it does.
Okay, so when I use Fearless or Dire, it’s awesome because it doesn’t just summon the big crab – it also brings out three little helper crabs! These mini-crabs have their own shields, which is cool. But here’s the really neat part: if I break those mini-crab shields, they’ll actually crash into the main crab, damaging its shield and doing some extra damage based on how much damage they took – 60% of any hydro damage and 10% of everything else. It’s a pretty clever way to deal extra damage!
When the three crabs appear, they’ll form a triangle around the boss. To make them line up, it’s best to position yourself along one side of that triangle and draw the crabs towards you.
Once the crab’s shield breaks, it will fall and become more vulnerable for a short time. When it gets back up, it will create a new fire shield and call in three smaller crabs to help.
Focus on attacking the smaller crabs first. They do more damage, and defeating them will also remove the protective fire shield from the larger crab.
Recommended Characters
Neuvillette |
Neuvillette has a powerful AOE charged attack that can hit all three mini-crabs at once at higher difficulties. Additionally, the innate pyro aura on the crabs gives him an extra Draconic Stack, which boosts his damage further. |
Furina |
Furina brings powerful hydro sub-dps as well as consistent hydro application. Furina also gives the whole team a large DMG% bonus, which is useful for most teams looking to beat this boss. |
Escoffier |
Escoffier works best when the whole team is hydro and cryo. Since most teams will have a lot of hydro, bringing Escoffier gives a 55% RES shred. She also heals well to stack fanfare for Furina and has decent sub-dps against the downed crab. |
Mualani |
Mualani is an alternative hydro DPS. While she does not have Neuvillette’s AOE, she does have extremely high single-target DPS. The innate pyro aura on the crabs gives her free vaporizes, and she is not limited by ICD. |
Yelan19 |
Yelan is a powerful sub-dps and support. She brings consistent hydro application, and she also has ramping DMG% bonus. |
Skirk |
Skirk’s teams use a lot of hydro, meaning that she is not particularly ill-suited for this boss. |
Example Teams
Neuvillette/Furina/Kazuha/Xilonen |
Neuvillette/Furina/Citlali/Escoffier |
Mualani/Mona/Sucrose/Xilonen |
Skirk/Furina/Yelan/Escoffier |
Footnotes
- Flins’s damage is not reliant on Ineffa, meaning that Ineffa can be used for another boss ↩︎
- Nefer’s damage, however, is practically dependent on Lauma ↩︎
- Her on-field lunar-dps playstyle is also heavily tied to Lauma ↩︎
- Lauma’s own lunar damage is quite small, so she should be paired with either Nefer or Columbina. ↩︎
- Ineffa can be substituted for Fischl to allow for more flexibility on other teams ↩︎
- Sucrose can be substituted for Nahida or Nilou. She can also be substituted for Zhongli, Kuki, or another sustain option. ↩︎
- Zibai’s fourth slot options are very flexible. Chiori, Gorou, C2 Xilonen (or C0 Xilonen in a double hydro team) are all viable. ↩︎
- Group the mini-dogs with Kazuha to destroy the shield ↩︎
- Lunar-charged does not scale off DMG%, so do not use Furina with Flins/Ineffa ↩︎
- I encourage not using his whole premium team to free up members for other teams. Columbina and Ineffa are very powerful by themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW4IMgGNd38 ↩︎
- Durin is also a good pick. Xiangling is viable, provided you have enough energy recharge on her ↩︎
- Skirk’s fourth slot options are very flexible. Yelan, Shenhe, Mualani, and Mona can all be used instead of Citlali ↩︎
- I used an overvape against this boss, though it was Hu Tao/Xingqiu/Yelan/Ineffa. Arlecchino/Xingqiu/Yelan/Ineffa also cleared for me. ↩︎
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBoBBjF6SWY ↩︎
- This is really, really hard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvh5qlEt3fQ ↩︎
- The pyro shield is 64U, meaning it needs 32 hits of hydro to destroy (assuming no other elements). ↩︎
- The mini-crabs’ shields are 12U. ↩︎
- The final hit to the mini-crabs is not counted in this damage. ↩︎
- Xingqiu is a good substitution for Yelan, though he has slightly longer cooldowns, less offensive supportive capability, and much worse sub-dps. ↩︎
