Chrissy Teigen Details How Star Search Cast Supported Sobriety Journey

Chrissy Teigen got by with a little help from her new friends.

Just a month after publicly sharing that she had begun her recovery journey again following a setback, the model explained how her fellow judges on Star Search, Jelly Roll and Sarah Michelle Gellar, were instrumental in supporting her progress.

She shared with her costars at the show’s premiere that this was the first time she’d been on set without wanting a drink. Being around them was enough; she felt energized just being with them. She explained that the experience taught her she could simply enjoy life, be herself – even silly and weird – and have people to laugh with, without needing anything else.

Chrissy Teigen, 40, who has four children – Luna, 9, Miles, 7, Esti, 3, and Wren, 2 – with her husband John Legend, recently shared that she used to relax after work by having a drink. She explained that she’d become accustomed to having alcohol readily available on set for a long time.

And for the reality personality, Chrissy’s Star Search pals make sober life especially fun.

She playfully recalled being called a ‘nightmare blunt rotation’ and added with a laugh that, in her opinion, they were actually the best one ever.

She emphasized, “It’s been really special getting to know them.”

Meanwhile, Jelly assured Chrissy, “Sobriety looks great on you.”

The three finalists also said they plan to keep in touch with the show’s winner, TJ Salta, who won on February 17th, and with all of the other talented contestants.

Chrissy said many of these young people are destined for success and she’s happy to offer any guidance they need. She’s already heard discussions about them getting managers and agents, and she’s confident they’ll do well. “You’re going to be just fine,” she told them.

Oh my gosh, back in October 2018, my idol, the amazing star of American Pie, shared the most incredible news on Instagram! He announced he’d been sober for a whole year, and it was just so inspiring and uplifting to see. I was seriously beaming with pride for him!

I remember when he first opened up about trying to get sober – it was over five years ago. He said he’d finally reached a point where his addiction to alcohol and drugs just became unbearable. And honestly, he put it perfectly: it’s really hard.

He shared that he’s been sober for a year, something he’s incredibly proud of after a difficult journey. He encouraged anyone who’s struggling with addiction to seek help, reminding them that it’s okay to ask and that recovery is possible.

Looking back on his battle with addiction, he thought about how far he’d gone to keep it a secret.

He shared on his wife Jenny Mollen’s podcast, All the Fails, that he was in therapy but still struggling with alcohol. He described a cycle where he’d leave a productive therapy session and immediately go buy vodka, drink it to excess, and then drive home. He admitted he used alcohol to escape his feelings and disconnect from his life and the present moment.

He explained that he’d carefully planned how much he’d drink, making sure he stayed coherent enough to talk. He mentioned he was constantly refilling the bottles at the bar to manage his alcohol intake.

The two-time World Cup-winning soccer player has publicly discussed using Adderall inappropriately while recovering from injuries during her time playing college soccer.

She shared on the 2025 podcast Question Everything with Danielle Robay that she had become seriously addicted to Adderall and was using it in dangerous ways. She explained she was taking it constantly, often going days without sleep. It was a chaotic period, and she worried about her health, even fearing a heart attack. She admitted to crushing and snorting the pills, acknowledging it was a very problematic time in her life.

However, in the midst of her struggle, her college coach Anson Dorrance was there to support her.

She described a difficult time where she had to adapt significantly. Anson encouraged her to read, and she found a life-changing book called Man’s Search for Meaning. It helped her understand and cope with suffering by offering a new perspective.

In October 2025, Migos member Quavo revealed he had been sober from codeine—an opioid often mixed with soda to create the drink known as sizzurp—for four years. He credited a serious conversation with his teenage son, Jordan, as the turning point that led him to get clean.

Offset shared a story on the show Baby, This Is Keke Palmer about his son repeatedly asking for pineapple Fanta, even though he rarely drinks soda. What really struck Offset was when his son noticed his own drink looked different and asked why, which he found incredibly touching.

Offset explained that the seemingly harmless comment really upset him, adding, “I almost cried when I went to my room.”

I felt like I was failing as a father,” the rapper explained. “He hasn’t realized there are drugs around, and he’s completely unaware. It worries me because even something simple, like him wanting the same soda as me, feels like I’m setting a bad example.

The Academy Award-winning actor has often openly discussed December 29, 1975, the date he stopped drinking.

In an October 2025 interview on The Interview podcast from the New York Times, he admitted he was driving under the influence in California and essentially lost consciousness at the wheel. He said he had no idea where he was going until he realized the danger he posed to others – and even to himself, which at the time he didn’t seem to care about. This moment, he explained, led him to recognize he had a problem with alcohol.

He turned to a friend for support, which helped him start a new chapter in his life. In December 2025, he celebrated 50 years of sobriety and shared a message of hope with others who are struggling with the same challenges he faced fifty years earlier.

He urged people to embrace life in an Instagram message, repeating, “Life, life, life and more life.”

The Valley star shared his decades-long battle with drugs in March 2025 after going to rehab.

Jax revealed on the March 4th episode of Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast that he’s struggling with addiction, specifically with cocaine. He admitted it was difficult to share this publicly.

He explained that he’s struggled with this issue intermittently since he was 23, and now, at 45, it continues to come and go. He’d sometimes stop, but other times it would become a significant problem again.

Jax stopped drinking and using cocaine at the same time. He explained that while he didn’t believe he had a serious drinking problem, he always used cocaine while drinking, so he decided to quit both. He’s now been sober for over 82 days – the longest stretch of sobriety he’s ever experienced.

Tom Holland, known for his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, quit drinking in 2022 because he felt controlled by alcohol. He admitted on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast that he was addicted, saying, “I was definitely addicted to alcohol, not shying away from that at all.” He also suggested that having a beer every day could be a sign of a problem.

The actor explained that you eventually hit a point where you regret having that extra drink. This usually leads to a really bad headache the next morning.

After changing his lifestyle, Holland found he was sleeping more soundly and coping with challenges more effectively.

He explained that he was much calmer and more able to handle problems on set. He felt mentally clear, healthier, and in better physical shape.

Oh my gosh, you guys, Sean Connery… it’s just incredible. He rarely ever talks about it, but he’s been sober for almost forty years now! Forty years! It’s so inspiring, and I wish he’d share more about his journey, but I totally understand if it’s personal. Still, it’s amazing, and I just want everyone to know what a legend he is, on and off screen.

He revealed in a May 2024 podcast interview that he doesn’t often talk about his sobriety, only mentioning it when relevant. He shared that he’s been sober for 39 years, since February 23, 1985.

Alec described a difficult period after his move to Los Angeles in 1983, admitting to a severe cocaine addiction. He said he was using a huge amount of the drug daily for two years, comparing it to how common coffee consumption was at the time – essentially, everyone was doing it.

And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.

Today, he relies on the city around him.

He finds New York City incredibly relaxing. He loves walking around and discovering new details he’s never noticed before – like interesting features on buildings. He also enjoys simple things like having lunch or coffee with friends.

I was so proud to hear that Anne Hathaway shared she’s been sober for over five years this April! She told the New York Times it felt like a real milestone for her, and honestly, it feels like one for all of us who admire her. It’s incredibly inspiring to see her openness and strength.

She explained her decision simply. “I realized it wasn’t the right path for me,” she said. “It felt difficult to completely refuse, but I had to be firm. It’s like an allergy – if you have a severe reaction, you don’t question it. I finally stopped questioning my feelings and accepted that it wasn’t a good fit.”

She’s glad she made the change. She explained, “I’ve found that things are just better overall. It really helped me avoid getting stuck in negativity, and I prefer to stay positive.”

When accepting the 2018 Woman of the Year Award from the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House—a program helping women recover from addiction—Moore discussed how she almost lost her career due to a harmful lifestyle.

I believe we all have key moments that define us and set our life’s course. Early in my career, I was heading down a very destructive path. Despite any achievements, I constantly felt inadequate and had very little self-worth. This quickly led to a crisis, and at the time, I didn’t understand why it was happening – it almost felt like something bigger than me intervened.

Moore, who received treatment in 2012, expressed gratitude to two people she hardly knew for giving her a wake-up call. She joked that they essentially told her she needed to get her life back on track or face the consequences. They gave her “a chance to change direction before I ruined everything,” she explained.

Moore reflected that others recognized potential in her that she hadn’t seen in herself. She expressed deep gratitude for their belief in her, saying she wouldn’t be where she was today without it.

Miley Cyrus revealed in 2022 that she’s been working to overcome her addiction to Xanax since 2020. She told Rolling Stone that recovery provided much-needed stability during a difficult time. “It gave me something to focus on and kept me from getting lost in my thoughts,” she explained. “It really gave me hope.”

The singer explained that once they discovered a way to briefly escape their pain, they were finished – meaning they’d reached a breaking point or given up on trying to cope.

She explained that her friends at the time didn’t discourage her drug use, which contributed to a downward spiral she described as a “dark, bottomless pit.” During the pandemic, Cyrus realized she was struggling and felt disconnected. She remembers frequently falling asleep and being unable to stay awake, indicating how deeply affected she was.

She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”

In his 2025 documentary, Stans, Eminem opened up about his past struggles with prescription pills. He shared that an overdose and missing his daughter Hailie Jade’s birthday were turning points that led him to change his life.

He explained that he became emotional realizing he didn’t want to repeat past mistakes. He recalled repeatedly pushing himself, asking if he really wanted to miss out on life again. He motivated himself, even with harsh language, urging himself to persevere not just for his own sake, but for the sake of those he cared about.

Focusing on making music again played a key role in the Oscar-winning actor’s recovery from addiction.

He said it did something—it switched on a light. That moment made him realize he wasn’t ashamed of being sober anymore. Instead, he began to see his sobriety as a strength, and he felt proud of overcoming his addiction.

The actor, known from the show Parenthood, had been sober for 16 years when they experienced a relapse in 2020. This happened after a motorcycle accident and led to them taking Vicodin.

He explained on his Armchair Expert podcast that he’s been taking medication consistently for about the past two months. He has a prescription, and he’s also taking a higher dose than prescribed.

Let me tell you, seeing someone struggle with addiction is heartbreaking. I’ve worked with so many people who’ve found themselves in this exact spot – hating what they’re doing, feeling like they have to hide it from everyone, and knowing deep down they need to stop. It’s a really scary cycle. They often describe needing more and more of whatever it is just to feel… okay. This person was at a point where they were using a dangerous amount, and they were terrified of the withdrawal that was coming. Beyond the physical side, there’s this immense loneliness that creeps in, this feeling of carrying a huge, isolating secret. It’s a really tough place to be, and recognizing it is the first step towards getting help.

In 2018, the star of Halloween openly discussed her decade-long struggle with opioid addiction, which started in the late 1980s after a small cosmetic procedure to address puffy eyes. The resulting prescription dramatically altered her life. She told People magazine, “I spent ten years stealing and deceiving people. No one had any idea.”

Curtis recalls the summer of 1998 as her lowest point. Her sister arrived with prescription painkillers for a broken rib, and Curtis, overwhelmed, took them all. Remembering the moment, she explained she knew her sister would discover the missing pills before leaving. She confessed in a note left on the suitcase. When her sister found the note, she embraced Curtis, expressing her love and concern, and stating she couldn’t bear to watch Curtis destroy herself.

Jamie Lee Curtis went to her first support group meeting on February 3, 1999, and that same day, she told her husband, filmmaker Christopher Guest, about her struggles with addiction. She said he was surprised he hadn’t noticed before, and she has been sober ever since.

Drew Barrymore, who has previously sought treatment for substance abuse, revealed in 2021 that she had reached a significant point in her recovery. Speaking on CBS Mornings, she shared that she’d been sober for two and a half years, explaining that alcohol simply wasn’t benefiting her life anymore.

It’s amazing how freeing and nerve-wracking it feels to finally share who you are, what you believe in, and everything you’ve achieved.

Drew Barrymore later told the Los Angeles Times she avoids calling herself “sober” because she doesn’t want to come across as overly strict or judgmental.

She explained that she used to tell herself, ‘I can learn this, I’ll get it,’ but eventually she came to the realization that she hadn’t, and wouldn’t, ever truly master it.

Bradley Cooper battled a cocaine addiction in the early 2000s. His friend, Will Arnett, helped him by directly addressing his issues and holding him accountable.

Cooper shared in a 2022 podcast interview that this was the moment he first recognized he was struggling with substance use. He said he could never forget that realization.

Cooper explained that Arnett’s honest and difficult conversation was the turning point that led him to get sober and change his life.

The actor, known for his role in Fight Club, battled alcohol addiction for years before Bradley Cooper helped him achieve sobriety. Accepting an award from Cooper at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards, he shared, “I got sober because of this guy, and my life has been better every day since.”

In September 2023, the former Cruel Intentions star revealed on Instagram that she hadn’t used nicotine or marijuana—or any other substances—for the longest time since her teenage years.

He shared his gratitude for overcoming addiction and being free from substance dependency. He described the experience of sobriety as bringing clarity and a strong sense of spiritual connection, saying it ‘feels real good’.

In 2018, the singer celebrated six years of being sober while on tour. However, she surprised her fans later that year with the release of her song “Sober,” in which she admitted to having struggled with relapse.

She sang, filled with regret, apologizing to her parents for losing control and drinking too much. She acknowledged past mistakes and expressed sorrow for the mess she’d made, while also thanking those who had stayed by her side through it all.

A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.

She shared on Instagram a couple of weeks ago that she’s been open about her struggles with addiction. She explained that it’s an ongoing battle, not something she’s simply overcome, and that she still needs to work on getting better. She asked for time to heal and focus on staying sober, and expressed her gratitude for the support she’s received. She’s hopeful about the future and determined to continue her journey to recovery.

In 2018, she spoke about her past struggles with sex and alcohol addiction. She explained that her addictions tended to shift over time, and when she was younger, she believed sex could solve any problem. She then described realizing she had also developed a serious issue with drinking.

She recalled a particularly low point when she was home alone and nearly finished her third bottle of wine. It was then she realized she might have a drinking problem.

I stopped completely and abruptly. That’s just how I am – I can do that. I tend to get really into things, so I always have to be careful and monitor my behavior. It’s not necessarily what you do, but how and why you do it. It’s the underlying reasons for your actions that matter. For example, wanting to have a lot of sex is fine, but you need to examine why you want that.

Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean revealed he first experimented with drugs before shooting the music video for their 2000 hit, “The Call.” He later told Good Morning America that he was extremely out of control during the video shoot. After a setback, he achieved sobriety in 2021 and experienced significant improvements in his health within a year, including losing 32 pounds in seven months by eliminating alcohol and fast food.

He told People magazine in July 2025 that he’s committed to staying on his current path. He explained it’s something he works on every day, but following advice from the recovery community has dramatically improved his life.

While AJ acknowledged he is “still learning, still growing,” he’s now confident in who he is.

I’ve been learning to set healthy boundaries, which is something I never did before, and it’s really helped me. ‘AJ’ is a character I sometimes play, but it’s not who I am as a person. My real name is Alexander James, and that’s what matters.

Following the unexpected death of Mac Miller, rapper Bow Wow—born Shad Moss—shared on Twitter that he had previously battled an addiction to cough syrup, often called “lean.” He explained that during the time he and Omarion worked on their album, FACE OFF, he was using lean every day. He admitted he was under the influence during a heated moment on BET with Torae, and that it negatively impacted his attitude, his fans’ perception of him, and his relationship with his family. Despite never mentioning lean in his music, he was heavily addicted, consuming it at least seven times a day during his UCP tour with Chris Brown. He experienced severe withdrawal symptoms after passing out backstage in Cincinnati, landing him in the hospital.

Bow Wow described the pain of withdrawal as unlike anything he’d ever felt, recalling needing to wear multiple hoodies even in summer because of the chills. He missed shows in Chicago and Baltimore due to being high and sick, admitting he was using the drug to fit in. He urged his fans to avoid drugs, to be good children, and to strive to be their best selves, stating he would be more open about his past. He expressed a desire to protect young people and encouraged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of drug use, emphasizing that he almost died from his addiction.

He revealed that the experience continues to affect his health, particularly his stomach, and reiterated his commitment to staying drug-free. He concluded by pleading with his fans, especially young artists, to avoid following trends and to break the cycle of drug use, emphasizing the importance of preserving young lives.

In 2018, the singer opened up about her struggles with addiction, coinciding with the release of her album No Shame and her memoir My Thoughts Exactly. She revealed she had been heavily using cocaine and drinking to excess. Things came to a head when, after accidentally hitting Orlando Bloom with her head at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party and knocking herself unconscious, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin intervened to help her.

In an interview with The Guardian, she described feeling deeply unfulfilled. She recalled a particularly low point, saying she even considered trying heroin because nothing else seemed to alleviate her pain.

Oh my gosh, I was SO worried when I found out about Lindsay Lohan’s co-star! I mean, the guy from The Parent Trap – it broke my heart to learn he struggled with cocaine throughout the ’80s and even had to go to rehab in 1990. But then I heard him talk about it on Today, and it made a little more sense. He said growing up in the ’60s and ’70s was just…different. Everyone was so much more casual about drugs back then, which is still awful, but it helped me understand how he even got started. I’m just so glad he got help and is doing better now!

He confessed that during the 1980s, his cocaine use was so extensive it rivaled some movie budgets. He described desperately pleading with God to help him stop, often right before work, only to find himself using again by late afternoon. He admitted to a cycle of regret and relapse, feeling overwhelmed by the addiction.

He described a powerful experience, what he called seeing a white light, where he felt like he was either dying or losing everything important in his life. He then had to explain this to his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, and afterward, he decided to get help. This, he said, marked the end of his struggle with cocaine.

Following an incident at a Newport Beach hotel where he attempted to break down his own door, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte entered treatment for alcohol addiction in 2018. His representative stated to TopMob News that Lochte had been struggling with addiction for years, leading to destructive behavior. He has admitted he needs help and is beginning treatment immediately.

According to a recent statement, Ryan understands that overcoming this illness is crucial – it will allow him to make good choices, be a devoted husband and father, and pursue his dream of competing in his fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and regaining his top form.

Despite knowing you shouldn’t get sober for another person, actor Jason Ritter credits his relationship with Melanie Lynskey as a key factor in his decision to stop drinking.

He realized how wonderful she was and believed she deserved someone truly great. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2023, he admitted he didn’t think he was that person, feeling he was ‘a little bit too crazy’ for her.

However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.

Looking back on when things first started, I remember him saying it was simpler to pretend he was doing everything for her. Honestly, he admitted he didn’t feel very valuable back then, and protecting her pain mattered more than his own. He’d tell everyone it was ‘for her,’ and that felt easier. But now, he’s finally doing it for himself, and it’s a really powerful change to see.

Oh my gosh, I’ve been following this guy for years, and I just learned even more about how strong he is! It’s incredible – he’s been sober for almost ten years now, but getting there? It was a real battle. Apparently, it all started right after high school with alcohol and painkillers, and it didn’t get any better when he became famous. He actually told People magazine that he used to carry this black leather laptop bag everywhere – and it wasn’t for his computer! It was filled with Jagermeister or vodka, always within reach. Can you believe it? He said he’d drink a couple of swigs every hour and a half to two hours, and then take a pill or two every three or four. It’s just…wow. He’s seriously my hero for overcoming all of that.

Honestly, it’s amazing to me that it didn’t slow him down. He actually said it himself – he wasn’t a mess! He was still writing, and not just anything, but more songs than he writes now! That’s what really freaks me out – the fact that he was creating all this incredible stuff while battling… well, you know. It just proves how unbelievably talented he is, and it’s honestly a little terrifying to think about.

In late 2011, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis and warned that continuing to drink could be fatal. He admitted he initially tried to cut back on his own, setting daily limits on pills and alcohol. “I’d tell myself, ‘Okay, just two pills today, and only this much from the bottle,’ and I’d even mark the bottle to keep track,” he remembered. But his efforts were short-lived. “It would work for a couple of days, then someone would have a party, and I’d start all over again.”

Oh my god, it broke my heart to hear he finally admitted he needed help. December 18th, 2011… that was the day he checked into rehab. He said himself he just knew he couldn’t beat it alone, and honestly, it was so relatable. He was so frustrated and embarrassed – can you imagine? He’s always been such a strong person, but this one thing just… wouldn’t stick. It was awful to hear him talk about it, but also… a relief that he was finally getting the support he deserved.
