Avowed is now available on PlayStation 5, and it performs well on the console. The RPG was originally published by Xbox.
Digital Foundry thoroughly tested the game’s port and found very few issues. However, it’s not a particularly impressive technical achievement overall.
This game is built on Unreal Engine 5, which can be a bit unpredictable. On PlayStation 5, it offers three graphics modes – Quality, Balanced, and Performance – each delivering exactly what its name suggests. However, none of these modes provide a flawless experience.
The ‘Quality’ setting aims for a sharp 1440p resolution, but limits the game to 30 frames per second. However, given how much fighting there is in Avowed, we don’t really recommend it. The slight improvement in graphics isn’t worth the significant drop in smoothness.
The game aims for a fluid 60 frames per second, but achieves this by rendering at a lower 1080p resolution and then scaling it up.
However, abandoning the title isn’t the best choice, especially considering the significant work already done on its impressive visuals – it truly looks fantastic at times.
Balanced mode aims for 40 frames per second with improved graphics, but you’ll need a 120Hz monitor to fully experience it.
Just so you know, all the different ways to play will be pretty much the same as on Xbox Series X. Honestly, though, it’s PS5 Pro players who might be a little disappointed with what’s on offer.
Obsidian’s PlayStation games haven’t been taking full advantage of the PlayStation’s power, and this one is no different. While competitive players might see slightly smoother performance and sharper graphics, that’s the extent of the improvements.
This game keeps things simple. It doesn’t offer advanced options that blend visual quality and performance, and it doesn’t seem to utilize the console’s upscaling technology either.
Another missed opportunity, then, but at least the RPG’s running as intended on PS5 hardware.
