Whether it’s the raw anger of the original games or the deeply moving narrative of the Norse adventures, the franchise always pushes the boundaries of what action-adventure games can achieve. Each new installment is highly anticipated, and fans are increasingly connected to both how the gameplay improves and the characters’ personal stories. This strong connection is what makes the series so beloved, but it also means that any changes or missteps are closely examined.

Interest in the God of War series recently hit a high point with the surprise release of God of War: Sons of Sparta during a PlayStation presentation. This followed the announcement of a God of War Trilogy remake, but Sons of Sparta quickly gained attention for its unique visual style and gameplay, which was inspired by the Metroidvania genre. While many fans were thrilled to finally see the long-awaited game, a vocal group strongly criticized it both when it was revealed and after playing. This strong reaction has led me to consider what it means for the future of the series, especially with excitement growing for the next installment, God of War 6.

God of War: Sons of Sparta Was Hurt by Its Own Name

The main challenge for God of War: Sons of Sparta was living up to the incredibly high expectations set by the previous God of War games. The original trilogy was beloved, but the 2018 God of War redefined the series with its stunning visuals, powerful story, and polished combat. Fans naturally expected the same level of quality in Sons of Sparta, which put a lot of pressure on developer Mega Cat Studios. While the God of War name helped get the game noticed, it also led to harsher criticism, even though Sons of Sparta is a well-made Metroidvania game.

A major source of player frustration with Sons of Sparta stems from how its co-op mode was handled. While advertised, co-op is only available in a challenge mode unlocked after finishing the main game. Many players expected to be able to play the entire game with a friend, given the story’s focus on Kratos and Deimos, and felt misled. God of War 6 May Need to Play It Safe

The negative response to God of War: Sons of Sparta is making people wonder what’s next for God of War 6. If fans are reacting so strongly to a smaller game, how will they feel about bigger changes, like making Atreus the main character? The series has suggested this might happen, but even that idea is proving controversial. Some players are excited to see Atreus’s story unfold, while others believe the games should continue to focus on Kratos. Given the strong reaction to Sons of Sparta, Sony Santa Monica might play it safe with the next big installment.

Moving forward, the developers might lean on what’s worked before – familiar gameplay, stories, and styles. While they’re known for innovation, successful reinvention depends on what fans want and how they react. Bold changes can be incredibly rewarding, as seen with the God of War reboot, but they can also backfire. Focusing on Atreus as the main character could open up new storytelling possibilities, but fans are very attached to Kratos’ story, so this shift needs to be handled with care, particularly remembering the mixed response to Sons of Sparta.

Playing it safe isn’t always the best strategy. This series became successful by taking chances. The move from Greek to Norse mythology was a big risk that really worked out. Being afraid to try new things could be just as harmful as upsetting fans with changes. The important thing now is whether the negative reaction to the ‘Sons of Sparta’ story will affect future creative choices. If fans keep rejecting experimentation, the franchise might not be able to evolve and grow in the same exciting ways it did when Kratos became a father.
